Kytra Hunter wins 2012 Honda Award for Gymnastics

Kytra Hunter of the University of Florida has won the 2012 Honda Sports Award for gymnastics after being crowned the NCAA all-around and vault champion this season as a freshman. Her selection by the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Program recognizes Hunter as the country's top female athlete in her sport.   Hunter is the first gymnast from the University of Florida to win the NCAA all-around title and only the fifth freshman in the 31-year history of the NCAA championships to win multiple titles. Hunter also won this year's SEC all around title, was named to the 2012 All-SEC First Team, and became a five-time All-American.   The freshman beat out three senior finalists: Jaime Pisani of the University of Arkansas, Geralen Stack-Eaton of the University of Alabama, and Amy Glass of Boise State University (this year's AAI Award winner as top senior gymnast).   You likely remember Kytra from her days in elite gymnastics, competing for  Hill's Gymnastics in Maryland under renowned coach Kelli Hill who also produced former Honda Award winner and NCAA standout Courtney Kupets. Hunter was a member of the U.S. Senior National Team from 2009-2011. She was 4th all around at the Visa Championships in both 2009 and 2010, and was the 2010 CoverGirl Classic floor champion. Internationally, Hunter represented the US in Germany, France, Italy, and Japan and was named an alternate for the 2009 and 2010 U.S. World Championship teams. Click here to watch a Workout Wednesday with Hunter and Coach Kelli Hill.    Hunter is currently majoring in Social and Behavioral Sciences and hopes to pursue an Economics degree.  via Honda Sports Awards Video interview with Kytra Hunter after winning the NCAA all around title:  Watch more video of Kytra Hunter on gymnastike.org

2012 Super Six: SEC vs Pac 12 Showdown!

The preliminary rounds of the 2012 NCAA women's gymnastics Championships have officially concluded, and the level of competition was as tough as ever.  In the second semifinal, the defending Champions began their night with the highest beam total of the day, a 49.60, led by Alabama seniors Ashley Priess and Geralen Stack-Eaton.  #1 Florida delivered four great events to take second, highlighted by a 49.575 on vault in the first rotation. Freshman Kytra Hunter had another historic competition in the Gwinnett Center, the same arena where she won last month's SEC title, to claim the 2012 NCAA All Around crown with an enormous 39.725. Georgia senior Kat Ding was 2nd with 39.650, and Arkansas senior Jaime Pisani scored 39.625 for 3rd.  Pisani and teammate Katherine Grable led Arkansas to a surprise visit back to the Super Six Finals, capitalizing on mistakes for #5 ranked Georgia.  Number 5 seed Georgia had an up and down night, beginning with a season high 49.40 on bars, rallying back from 2 falls for leadoff Christa Tanella. However, beam was a different story. Georgia suffered three falls on beam to total just a 48.275 and fell to last place. They finished their night on vault in dominating fashion, sticking 4 out of 6 of their yurchenko full vaults, highlighted by a 9.975 for Kat Ding. Georgia finished a dissapointed 5th place.  The surprise of the Championships was Ohio State who impressed with their big tricks and poise. They came in as the 12th seed and finished in 4th today with a 196.525.  Final team results for Session 2: 1. Alabama 197.675, 2. Florida 197.650, 3. Arkansas 197.150, 4. Ohio State 196.525, 5.
