The gymnastics programs of Michigan, Rutgers, Iowa State and West Virginia officially kicked off the 2019 NCAA season at the Cancun Classic. The meet was one of fierce competition and startling scores. Far from home, these four teams began their seasons in a fun venue and shook off the first-meet jitters in a tropical setting.
Michigan Wins Season Opener At The 2019 Cancun Classic Gymnastics Meet

Despite beginning the meet with two falls on beam, the No. 9 Michigan Wolverines persevered, led by freshman Natalie Wojcik, and had three strong events to win the 2019 Cancun Classic with a team score of 196.050, ahead of Iowa State, West Virginia, and Rutgers. Thanks to a strong vault rotation, the Iowa State Cyclones followed in second with a 194.275. West Virginia led beam and floor to finish in third with a 194.150 while the Rutgers Scarlet Knights began their 2019 season with a 189.750. View the complete results here.

2019 is here, and so is the NCAA gymnastics season! Many NCAA teams begin their seasons this weekend, and FloGymnastics is bringing live coverage of the Cancun Classic, where Iowa State, Michigan, Rutgers, and West Virginia will open their seasons January 4. Big Ten Power Michigan Starts Their Gymnastics Season Strong At Exhibition

The University of Michigan Women’s Gymnastics team is usually the team to beat in the Big Ten, and if their exhibition meet on Saturday, December 2, is any indication of how their year will go, this season will be no exception. The team squared off with three other Michigan teams at 2 PM in the Crisler Center, marking the fifth year in a row Michigan has competed against Eastern Michigan for an exhibition meet in this location. The Wolverines competed against Central Michigan as recently as last spring but has not faced off against Western Michigan since 2011.
