The 2018 Pacific Rim Championships will take place April 27-29 in Medellin, Colombia, and FloGymnastics will be providing the exclusive worldwide live stream for the men’s and women’s competitions.

Pac Rims only takes place every two years, and the unique format of the competition provides an opportunity to see lots of great gymnastics. The women’s meet consists of a team competition in a modified 6-5-4 format: a team of six athletes, made up of both juniors and seniors, with five scores that could count for the team. Out of those five, the best four scores will count. A sixth gymnast may compete on each event unofficially for the team, allowing her to compete for a spot in the individual all-around and event finals. All-around rankings are determined from the team competition, and apparatus finals consist of the top eight junior and top eight senior athletes per event, with a two-per-country rule.

There are lots of teams competing at Pac Rims, but one of the favorites for medals is Team Canada. Check out our breakdown of the team below.

The Senior Athletes

Headlining the senior field this year is Dynamo Gymnastics’ Brooklyn Moors. Moors has enjoyed loads of success so far this year, including taking first place in the all-around at Elite Canada and first on floor. Moors also competed at the American Cup, finishing seventh in the all-around and captivating the audience with her floor routine. It’s no surprise that Moors won the Longines Prize for Elegance at the 2017 World Championships.

Joining Moors on the senior side is another previous Elite Canada champion, Jade Chrobok, from Gemini Gymnastics. Chrobok won the all-around at Elite Canada in 2017. She has had a slower start to 2018, finishing 21st in the all-around at International Gymnix due to a few falls. She did compete a very strong Yurchenko 1.5, scoring a 14.2, and she will definitely be counted on to contribute on this event. Look out for Chrobok on beam as well—she can be super solid here when she is on.

Rounding out the seniors on Team Canada is Haley De Jong from Flicka Gymnastics. De Jong is another top all-around gymnast; she finished fourth at Elite Canada this year. The event to pay attention to is definitely uneven bars. She has a jam-packed routine, including a toe-on to Maloney to overshoot to toe-on full to Ray transition. De Jong is also capable of competing two vaults, both of which she could up the difficulty on to really make her one to watch on this event. At International Gymnix, she competed a Yurchenko full and a round-off, half-on, tucked forward salto off.

The Junior Athletes

Headlining the junior side is the 2018 International Gymnix Junior Cup champion, Zoe Allaire-Bourgie. Allaire-Bourgie has been one of Canada’s up-and-coming juniors for a few years now, and it’s safe to say she is continuing to be one of their top athletes. She is especially skilled on bars and beam, where she demonstrates both elegance and confidence in all of her moves. In addition to winning the all-around at the Gymnix Junior Cup, she also took second place on bars and first place on beam. Her beam routine has some great combinations, including a front aerial to split jump to tuck jump half.

If you enjoy Moors’ gymnastics, then you’ll also enjoy watching her Dynamo teammate, junior Emma Spence. Spence is lovely to watch on floor, showing the same grace as Moors with great choreography, but one of the best events to watch her on is bars. She competes an incredible combo of toe-full to Maloney to Pak salto to Van Leeuwen.

Imogen Paterson completes Team Canada, a gymnast with unique skills who is capable of challenging for the all-around. Paterson took second place in the all-around at Elite Canada this year and placed second on uneven bars, arguably one of her better events. She has a similar difficulty level to Allaire-Bourgie on the apparatus and could be a medal contender with some clean up on her form. Watch out for her cool beam mount as well—a backflip from the springboard to hold the beam.
