Hernandez, Foss Post Top Scores at Parkettes Elite Qualifier

Junior elite Laurie Hernandez of MG Elite dominated competition today at the
National Elite Qualifier at Parkettes Gymnastics in Allentown, PA. Competing in the second of two sessions, Hernandez posted the top all around score of the day for any age division with a very impressive 57.80.

Hernandez scored in the 14's on every event highlighted by a 14.650 on beam and and 14.550's on both vault and uneven bars. She won every event but vault where her teammate and first year elite Arianna Agrapides won with a stunning 15.150, the highest score of the day on any event.

Hernandez just turned thirteen on June 9th and competed in her first Visa Championships in 2012. She placed twenty-first in the all-around but showed tremendous potential. As result, she has been invited to the National team training camps and looks ready to make the U.S. Junior National Team in 2013. Hernandez becomes a senior elite gymnast in 2016, just in time for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Click here to watch an interview with Laurie.

In the first session of the day, junior elite
Ashley Foss of North Stars stole the show with a 55.00 all around score with 13.850's on bars and beam. First year elite Norah Flatley of Chow's was close behind with a 54.850.

Foss is also in her second season as a junior international elite and trains at North Stars Gymnastics Academy in New Jersey under coach Tony Gehman. At the 2012 Visa Championships, Foss finished 14th in the all-around and ninth on balance beam. She too hopes to make the Junior National Team in 2013. Click here to watch an interview with Ashley.

Athletes are hoping to not only qualify for international elite status (if they are new to elite competition) but also looking to attain qualifying scores to advance to the 2013 Secret U.S. Classic, held July 27 in Chicago. USA Gymnastics also offers a "Hopes" division which is a pre-elite level. Hopes athletes may qualify for the US Challenge, held in conjunction with the Classic. You can view a full breakdown of the qualifying standards below.

In the Hopes division, North Stars teammates Samantha Davis and Simone Bannen went 1-2 in the 12-13 age division all around while Olivia Dunne of ENA Paramus posted the top score in the 10-11 age division and qualified to the Challenge.
