Quinn Smith Competes New Vault And Wins Gold En Route To 2017 J.O. AA Title

Quinn Smith of Arizona Sunrays notched a 38.0 at the 2017 J.O. National Championships to secure the all-around gold in the Junior C age division last month. She also vaulted to a huge 9.8 to take home another gold from Indianapolis.

Quinn Smith of Arizona Sunrays notched a 38.0 at the 2017 J.O. National Championships to secure the all-around gold in the Junior C age division last month. She also vaulted to a huge 9.8 to take home another gold from Indianapolis, closing out her season with a bang.

For our ongoing series featuring the J.O. all-around champions, we caught up with Smith about her outstanding performance.

FloGymnastics: What was the highlight of the meet for you?
Smith: The highlight of my meet was competing my Yurchenko 1 1/2 on vault. I had never competed it before so when I landed it in competition I was super pumped and ended up scoring a 9.8.

Did you know you were a top contender for gold while you were competing?
I knew I could potentially do really well at this meet, but I never thought that I would place first.

How did you feel when you finished?
I was so happy and relieved when I finished. I was so happy that I hit 4 for 4 and also relieved that season was over. My mom was crying; she was so proud of me. The first thing my coach said was, "I'm so proud of you! You're hard work has paid off!"

When did you find out that you won?
I found out just a few minutes before they called my name. I actually looked over at my friend's phone and saw that she was looking at the rankings, and I saw my name on top.

How did you celebrate winning JOs?
My friend and I as well as the parents and coaches went to the Yard House for dinner.

What are your plans for summer/fall?
Over the summer, I plan to work upgrades, go the J.O. national team camp, and prepare for the season. I'm excited to work Maloneys on bars.

What are your future goals for gymnastics?
My future goals for gymnastics is to earn a full-ride gymnastics scholarship to a DI school.

What are you most proud of in your gymnastics career thus far?
In my gymnastics career, I am most proud of winning nationals, qualifying to the Nastia Cup, and winning state and regionals.

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time to relax?
In my free time, I love to do art and spend time with my friends

What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is "The Devil Wears Prada."

What is your favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject in school is math.

What do you love most about gymnastics?
I love the reward you get when you accomplish a goal you have been working at for a while.

Did you play any other sports growing up?
Yes, I used to swim, Irish dance, play soccer, and do T-ball.

What is your favorite event and why?
My favorite event is bars since I can swing and feel like I'm flying.
