Getting In The Zone: Embracing Your Leadership Role

Tight Mind Monday: Leadership

Doc Ali’s Tight Mind Monday: Leadership

Even though gymnastics is an individual sport, everything you do in and out of the gym can effect your team. We know attitudes and behaviors are contagious so this week, we are focusing on what kind of leader you are. Amanda Borden describes Leadership as doing what’s right even if it’s unpopular. Ask yourself,

Am I willing to step up and lead my team when it’s a hard assignment?
Can I be a leader even on hard days?
Can I inspire a teammate that is struggling and bringing the team energy down?
Can I take a risk and push through fear, so my teammates are inspired to do the same?

This week, explore and step up your leadership in the gym. There are many types of leaders. Listed below are just a few examples. Which type of leader are you?

Performance Leader
This type of leader leads by example. They are usually an extremely hard worker and although can be quiet, you look to them to be inspired by how many turns they take, their attention to detail, and how hard they push themselves every day.

Energy Leader
This is your vocal leader in the gym. They are the cheerleader, bad day changer, and energy builder. You can usually hear this person encouraging others from all the way across the gym.

Spiritual Leader
This athlete is the faith of the team. They are the one people turn to for advice, guidance, and hope. The spiritual leader also leads by embodying spiritual values of integrity, honesty, and compassion.

Social Leader
The social leader feeds the team chemistry in and out of the gym. This person is the one to make sure everyone feels included, plans outside of gym events, and might even plan philanthropic activities.

This week, push yourself to be the best leader you can be both in and out of the gym. Remember, all the little kids are watching YOU!
