Stanford upsets Oklahoma, advances to Super Six along with UCLA and Utah

Stanford snatched the third qualifying spot away from Oklahoma in the last rotation at Friday's first qualifying session with a 197.125 to Oklahoma's 196.925.

Only after mistakes on beam and floor from Vanessa Zamarripa and Samantha Peszek, respectively, did UCLA advance with the first spot with a 197.40 and Utah qualified second with 197.20.

Nebraska finished fifth (196.625) followed by LSU (196.55) after a rough bar rotation.

Freshman Rheagan Courville from LSU holds the top AA spot from session 1 with a 39.475.

She barely edged Utah's Stephanie McAllistor's 39.45.

OU's Megan Ferguson currently holds the top spot on beam with a 9.95 with Utah's Kailah Delaney qualifying first on vault with a 9.95.

UCLA's Aisha Gerber qualified first on bars with a 9.925.

The second session will get underway at 6 p.m. which will include Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, Oregon State, and Ohio State.

2012 NCAA Championships - Qualifications and All-Around
Alabama, Florida, UCLA, Utah, Stanford and Arkansas qualified to the NCAA Super Six team finals while Florida's Kytra Hunter won the all-around crown at the 2012 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships.
The preliminary rounds of the 2012 NCAA women's gymnastics Championships have officially concluded, and the level of competition was as tough as ever. 

In the second semifinal, the defending Champions began their night with the highest beam total of the day, a 49.60, led by Alabama seniors Ashley Priess and Geralen Stack-Eaton. 

#1 Florida delivered four great events to take second, highlighted by a 49.575 on vault in the first rotation.

Freshman Kytra Hunter had another historic competition in the Gwinnett Center, the same arena where she won last month's SEC title, to claim the 2012 NCAA All Around crown with an enormous 39.725. Georgia senior Kat Ding was 2nd with 39.650, and Arkansas senior Jaime Pisani scored 39.625 for 3rd. 

Pisani and teammate Katherine Grable led Arkansas to a surprise visit back to the Super Six Finals, capitalizing on mistakes for #5 ranked Georgia. 

Number 5 seed Georgia had an up and down night, beginning with a season high 49.40 on bars, rallying back from 2 falls for leadoff Christa Tanella. However, beam was a different story. Georgia suffered three falls on beam to total just a 48.275 and fell to last place. They finished their night on vault in dominating fashion, sticking 4 out of 6 of their yurchenko full vaults, highlighted by a 9.975 for Kat Ding. Georgia finished a dissapointed 5th place. 

The surprise of the Championships was Ohio State who impressed with their big tricks and poise. They came in as the 12th seed and finished in 4th today with a 196.525.

2012 Women's All-Americans and Event Final Qualifiers

This year's first and second team All-Americans have been announced, after two hard-fought rounds of semifinal competition here in Duluth.  The first team All-Americans also advance to Sunday's Individual Event Finals.

There will be no all-around final, and the AA champion is Florida freshman Kytra Hunter, who scored a 39.725 in Semifinal 2.

Hunter, Ding, and Stack-Eaton win national titles

Double event winner Kat Ding with Georgia teammate Lindsey Cheek at the NCAA awards cermony. 

Kytra Hunter, Kat Ding, and Geralen Stack-Eaton are your 2012 individual national champions.

Kytra Hunter started her night out on vault where she nearly stuck her 1.5 twisting Yurchenko. She followed up with a Yurchenko full with a big step back. The two vaults averaged were good enough for first, though, with a score of 9.875.

Kat Ding defended her national title on the uneven bars after a near-perfect routine for a 9.9875. She received four perfect 10s from the six judges.

Ding's major competition came from Alaina Johnson of Florida, but Johnson faltered and only scored a 9.4875.

On beam, Geralen Stack-Eaton took the title with a 9.9375 with Oklahoma’s Megan Ferguson finishing second, and individual competitor form Arizona Katie Matusik finishing third.

On floor, it looked like Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs was going to run away with her first individual title, but Ding took it home with 9.95 for her final routine as a Gym Dog.

Alabama Crimson Tide: Back-to-Back National Champions
...



The Alabama Crimson Tide are the 2012 National Champions with a total score of 197.85.

It all came down to the last competitor on beam for the Tide when Ashley Priess needed a 9.9 to tie Florida for the title.

Priess not only matched that score but exceeded it as she finished the night with a 9.95.

Although UCLA finished on a bye, they put up a very solid 197.75 for the Gators and Crimson Tide to try and reach.

However, the Bruins’s total wasn’t enough as they finished the night in third.

UCLA was led by Vanesa Zamarripa’s 39.775 in the all around– a score which would have won the individual all around title the night before.

Stanford finished their night off with a huge vault rotation scoring a 49.55.

The Cardinal finished in fourth with an impressive 197.5.

Utah finished in fifth with a 197.375 and Arkansas had to absorb a rough 48.45 floor rotation to finish sixth with a 196.3.

This was one of the tightest Super Six finals in years.

With Alabama’s win, the NCAA trophy will stay within the “big 4” schools– the four school to have won a national title– for at least another year.
