Good evening from Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. We're teed up for a fun night of wrestling here in Michigan with the Wolverines tangling with Penn State in one of the most highly anticipated duals of the college season. We'll keep you updated throughout the evening with all of the developments from start to finish.
We'll start tonight at 125 pounds. One lineup change of note: NCAA finalist Stevan Micic is out tonight for the Wolverines. Drew Mattin will wrestle in his place at 141.
125 pounds: #10 Drew Hildebrandt (Penn State) vs. #1 Nick Suriano (Michigan)
First period: Suriano fires off a double about 30 seconds in and comes up with Hildebrandt’s left leg. He’s trying to finish on the edge and corrals the far leg for two. Now it’s ruled off. Back to the center with no score. Stall warning on Hildebrandt with a minute left in the period. No score at the end of the first.
Second period: Suriano starts down, sits out, clears the hands and he’s away in eight seconds to go up 1-0. Midway through the period and neither guy has been able to get to the legs since the first Suriano shot of the bout. A couple half shots by Hidlebrandt followed by a Suriano attack and a Hildebrandt reattack, but it remains 1-0 going to the third.
Third period: Hildebrandt gets to his feet and Suriano returns him. Hildebrandt is up to his feet again and Suriano drives him out for a restart at the 1:34 mark. Hildebrandt gets to his feet once again, but Suriano takes him back down out of bounds with 1:01 to go and Suriano’s riding time at :52. Suriano pushes his riding time over a minute. Hildebrandt has repeatedly gotten to his feet, but he’s been unable to get away. Hildebrandt hits a switch in the closing seconds and escapes to make it 1-1, but Suriano prevails 2-1 on riding time.
Michigan 3, Penn State 0.
133 pounds: #1 Roman Bravo-Young (Penn State) vs. #8 Dylan Ragusin (Michigan)
First period: A couple short bursts of activity in the early going, but neither guy comes remotely close to scoring. Now there’s a little flurry on the edge with Bravo-Young getting to the corner, collecting one leg and then the other while toeing the boundary line with :50 to go in the period. Michigan assistant David Bolyard tosses in the challenge block, but the call on the mat stands after video review. End of 1: Bravo-Young leads 2-0 with 52 seconds of riding time.
Second period: Tough ride by Ragusin to start the period. Bravo-Young gets to his feet and Ragusin returns him. Bravo-Young escapes at the 1:16 mark to increase his lead to 3-0, but his riding time advantage is down to :08 now. End of 2: Bravo-Young leads 3-0.
Third period: Ragusin starts down to begin the third. Bravo-Young is working a tilt and now he’s getting a count and momentarily appeared close to a fall. He’ll get four backs here to blow it open. Bravo-Young is close to taking Ragusin over again. Ragusin gets away with 14 seconds left to trim the lead to 7-1. Big escape there — at least for now. Bravo-Young spins around on the edge as time expires. It’ll go to video review. No takedown. Bravo-Young wins 8-1.
Michigan 3, Penn State 3.
141 pounds: #1 Nick Lee (Penn State) vs. Drew Mattin (Michigan)
First period: Lee is all over Mattin early and gets in on a single before switching off to a double about 30 seconds in. Mattin escape and Lee is back in again on the left leg and works up to finish his second takedown. Lee breaks Mattin down on the edge and pushes his riding time over a minute before they go out of bounds with 1:04 left in the period. Mattin sits out and escapes off the restart. Shot by Mattin and Lee fends it off and reattacks for two more. Lee leads 6-2 with 1:30 RT at the end of 1.
Second period: Lee starts down to begin the second. Lee increases his lead with a reversal. Mattin escapes to make it 8-3, but Lee is back in on him almost immediately and scores again to make it 10-3. Stall warning on Mattin on the bottom. Lee tilts Mattin for four backs to make it 14-3. End of 2: Lee leads 14-3 with 2:42 RT.
Third period: Mattin starts down to begin the third and Lee releases him to make it 14-4. Lee gets to the corner and runs around for two. Lee goes optional escape after a restart and he’s around Mattin almost immediately for two more. Now Lee has a cradle locked up, but Mattin breaks the grip and escapes. It’s 18-6 with a minute left. Lee needs one more takedown and a rideout for the tech. There’s the takedown with :37 to go. Stall warning on Mattin on the bottom. That’ll do it. Nick Lee wins 21-6.
Penn State 8, Michigan 3
149 pounds: #15 Beau Bartlett (Penn State) vs. Cole Mattin (Michigan)
First period: Bartlett hits a knee tap and takes Mattin to his back in the opening seconds. Now the action is stopped for a Mattin injury. Trainers are out looking at Mattin's left leg and that’s going to be it. Bartlett wins by injury default.
Penn State 14, Michigan 3
157 pounds: Terrell Barraclough (Penn State) vs. #14 Will Lewan (Michigan)
First period: No score midway through the first. Barraclough is doing a good job of controlling center. He dives in on a shot, but Lewan fends it off. No score at the end of 1.
Second period: Lewan starts down to begin the second, gets some hip separation and hip heists out for the first point of the match. Lewan shoots from space and snags Barraclough’s right leg and he’s close to finishing. There’s the takedown with seven seconds left in the period. Lewan leads 3-0 at the end of 2.
Third period: Barraclough is up and out to make it 3-1. Now he’s in on a shot, but Lewan kicks out of it. Another shot by Barraclough and a counter attack by Lewan drives Barraclough out midway through the third. Shot by Barraclough, Lewan counters with a front headlock and gets to a leg and finally finishes with 19 seconds left to go up 5-1. Barraclough escapes to make it 5-2. Lewan wins 5-2.
Penn State 14, Michigan 6
165 pounds: #17 Brady Berge (Penn State) vs. #10 Cameron Amine (Michigan)
Not much happening in the first two minutes. Berge changes levels and gets in a low-single and finishes quickly to go up 2-0. Berge rides out Amine after the takedown and leads 2-0 with :50 RT at the end of 1.
Second period: Amine starts down to begin the second and quickly escapes to make it 2-1. Berge has :56 RT. Neither guy is pulling the trigger here. End of 2: Berge leads 2-1.
Third period: Berge is up and out to go up 3-1. Shot by Amine with 30 to go and Berge feels it coming. Another shot by Amine, but Berge fends it off. Berge wins 3-1.
Penn State 17, Michigan 6
174 pounds: #1 Carter Starocci (Penn State) vs. #6 Logan Massa (Michigan)
First period: Great flurry of activity on the edge. Starocci quickly gets to an angle, snags a leg Massa tries fighting it off before Starocci gets behind both arms on the edge while keeping a foot in for the takedown. Massa escapes off the restart to make it 2-1. Stall warning on Massa. Starocci drops in on a double late in the period, but Massa fights it off. End of 1: Starocci leads 2-1 with :10 RT.
Second period: Starocci escape. Massa gets in deep on a shot and has Starocci draped over the top. He’s trying to stack Starocci up, but Starocci comes out of trouble before a potentially dangerous call stops the action. End of 2: Starocci leads 3-1.
Third peirod: Massa starts down, gets to his feet, clears the hands and gets away. Starocci is back in immediately and finishes for two. Michigan is challenging that it shouldn’t have been an escape for Massa at the beginning of the sequence. The public address announcer just stated that a challenge earlier in the dual was an official’s challenge and not a Michigan challenge. The call here was just overturned, so it’s back to 3-1 in favor of Starocci. Massa gets up to his feet and away after the restart. Starocci takes a shot from space and Massa has him in a front headlock on the edge. Stall warning on Starocci with :45 to go. Massa bear hug in the center of the mat, driving Starocci to the edge, but they go out with no points scored. Starocci dives in on a leg with 10 to go and he’s going to run out the clock on a 3-2 win.
Penn State 20, Michigan 6
184 pounds: #1 Aaron Brooks (Penn State) vs. #2 Myles Amine (Michigan)
First period: Brooks taking ground early. Amine takes a shot and Brooks has him in a front headlock that gets stalemated with 1:43 to go in the period. Brooks once again is controlling center before Amine circles and runs Brooks off. Low-single by Brooks with Amine trying to sit the corner. This one gets stalemated with :49 to go. Scoreless at the end of 1.
Second period: Brooks is working hard to keep Amine down. Amine gets to his feet and Brooks lifts him out with no change. Amine escapes after Brooks accumulates 51 seconds of riding time. Brooks drives Amine out for a stall warning late in the period. Amine leads 1-0 going to the third.
Third period: Brooks starts down to begin the third. Amine is riding the left side. Brooks escapes roughly 25 seconds into the period to tie it up 1-1. Amine gets in deep on a head-inside single, but Brooks hips into him and now has an ankle. Now Brooks is squared up and Amine is still trying to to finish. Brooks breaks the grip and spins around for two. Brooks wins 3-1.
Penn State 23, Michigan 6
197 pounds: #2 Max Dean (Penn State) vs. #8 Patrick Brucki (Michigan)
First period: Brucki gets to a leg and he’s trying to collect the other. Dean reaches back and snags a leg and they’re in a scramble. Stalemate. Low-single and quick finish for Brucki at the 1:20 mark. Dean escapes to make it 2-1. Brucki is in on a single, but Dean fights it off for a stalemate. End of 1: Brucki leads 2-1 with :21 RT.
Second period: Dean escapes in nine seconds to tie the match 2-2. Dean takes a shot and Brucki locks up a cradle for two. Dean breaks the grip and gets to his feet to make it 4-3. End of 2: Brucki leads 4-3 with :42 RT.
Third period: Brucki starts down to begin the third and gets up to his feet before Dean drops in on a single for several seconds with no count. They’re out of bounds. Dean breaks Brucki down off the restart and has riding time working in his favor now. He can ride out to tie. Out of bounds with :41 to go. Dean has :38 RT. Dean drops in on a single again and has Brucki’s leg up in the air again with Michigan’s bench looking for a stall call. Dean rides Brucki out in the third to force overtime.
Overtime: Brucki takes a shot and Dean slides around him for a takedown to rally back for a 6-4 victory.
Penn State 26, Michigan 6
285 pounds: #4 Greg Kerkvliet (Penn State) vs. #2 Mason Parris (Michigan)
First period: Snatch single by Kerkvliet and he dumps Parris for a takedown and cuts Parris loose to make it 2-1. Another single by Kerkvliet. He elevates and finishes again and turns Parris loose to make it 4-2. Parris evens it up on a takedown late in the period. It’s 4-4 at the end of 1.
Second period: Parris starts down and gets to his feet before Kerkvliet returns him out of bounds. Parris gets up to his feet and escapes to go up 5-4. End of 2: Parris leads 5-4. Kerkvliet has :20 RT.
Third period: Kerkvliet starts down, gets to his feet and clears hands to escape, making it 5-5 with 1:41 to go. Kerkvliet is having a lot of success getting in on Parris’ left leg and he’s in deep again. He elevates and sweeps the other leg for a finish to go up 7-5. Kerkvliet rides out Parris to tack on a point for riding time and an 8-5 win.
Final: Penn State 29, Michigan 6
