British Olympian Ellie Downie underwent surgery this week to repair an ankle injury she sustained at the 2017 British Championships. The championships were from March 24-26 in Liverpool and Downie went home with a gold in the all-around competition after scoring a 55.35. Before her injury, she also took the event titles on vault with a 14.437 and on bars with a 14.600.

Downie wrote on Instagram that she worked through her injury for the European Championships because she was determined to have her hard work this year pay off. Despite her ankle being in less-than-prime condition, Downie made history at the European Championships by winning gold in the all-around final with a 55.75. She is the first-ever British gymnast to take all-around gold in any major international championship.

My eyes are now set on getting ready and fit for the Commonwealth Games next year and I'm very excited to be on the road to recovery and get fit again. A minor set back is a pathway for a major comeback.
Following a very successful Spring, surgery to repair Downie's ankle became a priority, which has taken her out of contention for the 2017 World Championships in Montreal.

Considering Downie's spirit of a fighter and her determination to succeed, she will surely be back in the gym as soon as she can!
