Maddie Desch has announced her retirement from elite gymnastics after learning she re-fractured her back. Desch trains at Great American Gymnastics Express under coaches Al Fong and Armine Barutyan Fong. She is expected to attend the University of Alabama and join the gymnastics team this fall.

Desch posted a note to her friends, family, and fans on social media:

The caption reads,

Dear friends, family, and fans,
Today I am announcing my retirement from elite gymnastics. As some of you may know, I have been battling with a back injury for the past few months and it has prevented me from training at the level that I want and need. I recently found out that it was re-fractured, which leads me to this hard decision. I am so grateful for all of the opportunities I have had to represent the U.S. and wear that USA on my back. I have made so many great memories. I have not only grown as a gymnast, but a person through all of my experiences. With the little time that is left, I have decided to let my body heal and look forward to the amazing chapter I have ahead at the University of Alabama. I would like to thank everyone for their support throughout my journey as an elite gymnast.
Sincerely,
Maddie Desch

A four-year National Team member, Desch competed in multiple international meets. Desch helped the U.S. win gold at the 2015 Pan-American Championships, where she also earned silver in all-around. Desch was also part of the team that won gold at the 2014 World Championships.

A solid all-around gymnast, Desch displays beautiful artistry, difficult skills and the unique combinations known from GAGE gymnasts. We look forward to seeing her in NCAA competition!
