Canada Announces Pan Am Games Team


Canada has announced their team for the Pan American Games, which will be held on July 10-26 in Toronto. The team includes Elsabeth Black, Madison Copiak, Maegan Chant, Isabela Onyshko, and Victoria Kayen Woo, according to Gymnastics Canada.
Elsabeth Black, from Halifax Alta in Nova Scotia, is a seasoned veteran with seven years of elite competition under her belt. She was part of the 2012 Canadian Olympic Team that made history by qualifying to Team Finals for the first time and notching a fifth place finish. She was part of the 2013 and 2014 World Championship team for Canada and earned the silver medal at the 2014 Pacific Rim Championships. Black is the reigning Canadian National Champion after recently taking the title for the third year in a row.
Madison Copiak trains at Calgary Gymnastics Centre in Alberta. Copiak placed 11th in the all-around at 2014 Elite Canada and tied for third on bars with Victoria Kaying Woo at the 2015 Canadian National Championships with a 13.650. She is committed to Washington for 2016-2017, according to her club.
Maegan Chant is from Waterdown, Ontario and trains at World Class Gymnastics. She helped Canada to a second place team finish at the 2014 Pacific Rim Championships and took the bronze medal on vault. Chant earned silver on both vault and floor at the 2014 Canadian National Champtionships and was part of the 2014 World Championship team. Chant has committed to the University of Florida.
Isabela Onyshko of Brandon Eagles Gymnastics in Manitoba was part of Canada’s 2014 World Championship team and 2014 Commonwealth Games team. She's already competed a couple international meets this season including the Jesolo Trophy and recently competed at the 2015 Ljubljana World Cup, where she won gold on both bars and beam and second on floor. At the 2015 Canadian National Championships, Onyshko earned the silver medal in the all-around for the second year in a row with a 57.550. She also captured the gold on floor and bars and took second on beam.
Victoria Kayen Woo trains at Gym Richelieu in Quebec. She competed in the 2015 International Gymnix competition, taking first in the all-around and third on both bars and floor. She scored a 13.650 to tie for third on bars with Madison Copiak at the 2015 Canadian National Championships.
Canada has a solid team and is looking for a strong performance at the Pan Am Games, especially because the meet is in their country. This team might be a good indicator of which gymnasts are the front runners for World Championships later this year.
