Training at Jesolo: Top Videos Worth Watching

Gymnastike is on site at Jesolo this week and we’ve been able to sneak a peek at some of the routines the gymnasts have been training for competition this weekend. While we recommend watching all the great videos provided from the training sessions, we’ve provided a summary (for those short on time) of the most interesting footage. See below for some of the highlights from training that we think are worth a watch.

*Note: Be sure to sign up for Gymnastike Gold if you haven’t already so you have access to all of the exclusive coverage of Jesolo this week!

BARS

Laurie Hernandez - USA
Bars - Day 2 Training - Jesolo 2015

Laurie’s bar work in practice has been impressive, with big release moves and beautiful form. The video from training shows her with straight, locked together legs and pointed toes, and she always hits those handstands. Of particular note are her two big release moves that happen right at the top of her routine.

Maggie Nichols - USA
Bars - Day 2 Training - Jesolo 2015

Maggie Nichols throws some big release moves in her bar routine as well, but what is most notable is all of her connections. We saw a hint of this during the January team training camp, but it’s great to see it all put together in this video from Jesolo training. Of particular note, check out her Pak Salto connected straight into a Maloney.

Kyla Ross - USA
Bars - Day 1 Training - Jesolo 2015

Kyla Ross has been one of the US’s strongest bar workers in recent years, so it’s exciting to see that she’s put together a new bar routine, to be debuted in Jesolo. While many of her skills are the same, she has a few new moves to show off - most notably her new dismount, which is a big shift from her old double layout.

BEAM

Emma Nedov - Australia
Beam - Day 2 Training - Jesolo 2015

Emma Nedov from Australia performed an exquisite beam routine in training, complete with strong tumbling (including a difficult series) and great form execution, with only a few small wobbles. She seems to perform of her moves with a lot of precision - it will be interesting to see how she scores in competition.

Aly Raisman - USA
Beam - Day 2 Training - Jesolo 2015

One of the most impressive training videos was of Aly Raisman on beam. Beam was always one of Aly’s strongest events, and she looks just as good as she did in 2012, if not better, in Jesolo. Of particular note is her dismount - a “Patterson”, or arabian double front, which you can see in training from Day 2. Her landing is very clean and probably one of the best we’ve seen, even when compared to her peak competition days in 2012.

Ellie Black - Canada
Beam - Day 1 Training - Jesolo 2015

Ellie Black has a super strong beam routine, complete with some of the toughest tumbling you’ll see at Jesolo. The video from training shows her with a lot of confidence and control of the apparatus, with her most notable sequence being her back handspring step-out directly into backwards somersault with a full twist - and she makes it look easy.

FLOOR

Jazmyn Foberg - USA
Floor - Day 2 Training - Jesolo 2015

We saw some impressive tumbling from Jazmyn during the training sessions, including a full in, a double layout and a full twisting double layout. It will be interesting to see if she competes all three of these passes this weekend.

Gabby Douglas - USA
Floor - Day 2 Training - Jesolo 2015

It’s worth checking out some of the videos of Gabby training her new floor routine, which has a very different feel from the routine she performed back in 2012. While her old routine was upbeat and fun, the kind of music people clapped their hands to, her new routine has a much more dramatic feel to it with more classic instrumentals. Her dance matches this feel, and the few passes we saw demonstrate that her tumbling is just as dramatic and sky-high.

Victoria Nguyen - USA
Floor - Day 2 Training - Jesolo 2015

Victoria Nguyen showed off her beautiful floor routine which not only has powerful tumbling passes, but also demonstrates her incredible flexibility and exquisite form throughout. Victoria is another gymnast with very dramatic and big music, which she dances through with both energy and poise. We expect this routine to get a very big score!

VAULT

Emily Little - Australia
Vault - Day 2 Training - Jesolo 2015

Emily Little is a very powerful gymnast, so it’s no wonder her vault was so strong in practice. Be sure to check out the video of her impressive double twisting Yurchenko, where she displays great form in the air and nearly sticks the landing.

Gabby Douglas - USA
Vault - Day 2 Training - Jesolo 2015

Gabby Douglas showed great height and power in her double twisting Yurchenko during training. You’ll see from the video that she gets higher off the vault table than most of the other gymnasts performing the same vault, suggesting that she should have no problem getting her Amanar back in the near future.

Simone Biles - USA
Vault - Day 1 Training - Jesolo 2015

Even though we’ve seen Simone perform this vault dozens of times by now, it never gets any less impressive. Check out the video of her practicing her Amanar on the first day of training, when she just has a small step to the side on her landing.
