Down But Not Out - Motivated Mary-Anne Monckton
Very few gymnasts actually complete their careers completely unscathed by injury; broken bones, torn ligaments, and major surgeries have simply been accepted as a part of the sport. But, the true test of strength occurs in the process of what is known as “the comeback” and Australian international elite gymnast, Mary-Anne Monckton, has proven to be one tough cookie.

An eight-year veteran of the National Team, Monckton has won a gold medal at each of the Australian Nationals since 2010.  Despite consistent success and contribution at international competitons, Monckton was not named to the team that represented the Aussies at the 2012 London Olympics.

Determined to prove herself worthy, Monckton continued to train and has become a consistently reliable piece of the Australian National Team puzzle. At the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Monckton won silver on beam and aided her team to a spot on the podium with a silver medal finish.

Following a seventh-place team finish at the 2014 World Championships in Nanning, China, Monkcton returned home and underwent surgery on her left ankle to repair a ruptured peroneal tendon. Just one week out of surgery, Monckton began to chronicle her recovery and the steps she’s taking to stay on top of her game.
