After the first day of competition at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the field is set for event finals on five events.

 

On women’s vault, Claudia Fragapane (ENG) qualified in first place with a 14.453 average, leading second place qualifier Ellie Black (CAN) by a comfortable margin of 0.304. Qualifying in third place was Kirsten Beckett (RSA), with Kelly Simm (ENG) just behind in fourth place. Maegan Chant (CAN) qualified in fifth place, followed by Georgia-Rose Brown (AUS), Dipa Karmakar (IND), and Emma White (SCO).

 

On the uneven bars, Rebecca Downie led the field with a 14.683 for the top qualifying spot. Four Australian women scored well enough to earn finals slots, but only two of these women will be able to compete in the finals due to the two-per-country rule. Larissa Miller and Georgia-Rose Brown will compete, while fourth-place finisher Olivia Vivian and seventh-place finisher Mary-Anne Monckton will miss out. Lizzie Beddoe of Wales, Ruby Harrold of England, Ellie Black, Raer Theaker of Wales, and Kirsten Beckett will round out the field on that event. Fragapane qualified in eighth place but will also sit out the finals due to the two-per-country rule.

 

This rule also proved troublesome on men’s floor exercise, where all four competitors from England finished in the top eight slots. Max Whitlock and Sam Oldham, the first and second-place qualifiers, will move on to the finals while Kristian Thomas and Nile Wilson will sit out. Qualifying in third was Daniel Keatings (SCO), followed by Scott Morgan (CAN), Clinton Purnell (WAL), Ashish Kumar (IND), David Bishop (NZL), and Wah Toon Hoe (SIN).

 

Whitlock also took the top qualifying spot for the pommel horse finals, narrowly edging out teammate Louis Smith with a 15.733 and 15.700 respectively. Keatings took the third spot, followed by Jac Davies (WAL), Zi Jie Gabriel Gan (SIN), Anderson Loran (CAN), Daniel Purvis (SCO), and Purnell. Wilson (ENG) and Frank Baines (SCO) found themselves on the wrong end of the two-per-country rule and will miss the finals despite seventh and ninth place finishes.

 

Morgan led qualifications on still rings with a score of 15.200 and a 0.333 lead over teammate and second-place qualifier Kevin Lytwyn (CAN). Purvis qualified in third place, followed by Oldham, Matthew Palmer (NZL), Whitlock, Purnell, and Naoya Tsukahara. Wilson (ENG) finished in seventh place but will again sit out as the third-place finisher on the English team.
