TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama gymnastics team has signed 2012 Canadian Olympian Dominique Pegg for the 2014 season, head coach Sarah Patterson announced Monday.
“We’re very excited to have Dom joining us this fall for the 2014 season,” Patterson said. “She has been on our radar for quite a while and this is a very happy conclusion to a long process. She is an extremely gifted athlete who has competed at the highest level and will help us continue our goal of competing for championships on a yearly basis.”
Pegg was part of the Canadian Olympic team that made event finals for the time in its history, finishing fifth at the London Olympiad. Individually, Pegg finished 17th in the Olympic all-around final. At the 2012 Canadian National Championships, she earned silver in the senior all-around event and bronze in both the vault and balance beam events.
“I really think it’s quite a blessing that I get to come and not only go to school at the University of Alabama but also represent them by doing what I love,” Pegg said. “I had an amazing time competing with my team at the 2012 Olympics, but it is time for a new chapter in my life.”
The Crimson Tide’s third Olympian, the Sarnia, Ontario native, was also a part of Canada’s 2010 World Championship team that competed in Rotterdam, Holland. As part of the 2010 Pacific Rim Championships team, Pegg won the vault and finished eighth in the all-around.
Pegg graduated from St. Christopher high school. She is coached by David and Elizabeth Brubaker at Bluewater Gymnastics Club.
She joins a freshman class that will compete in both the Southeastern Conference and NCAA Championships in nearby Birmingham, Ala., and already includes 2011 USA Junior Olympic national all-around and floor exercise champion Katie Bailey, four-year member of the United States National Team Amanda Jetter and USA J.O. national qualifier Mary Lillian Sanders.
