Sean Melton Dominates Day 1 of JO National Championships

The preliminary round of level 10 competition took place yesterday at the Men's Junior Olympic National Championships in Long Beach. The highlight of the day was the domination of Sean Melton from Orlando Metro of the junior (14-15) age division. StickitMedia points out that if not for a fall on high bar, Melton would have totaled a 90.00 in the all around! That is a world class score. With the fall he ended the day with 88.75, nearly a full point higher than any other gymnast in the competition, junior or senior. Akash Modi of Monmouth sits in 2nd and last year's level 9 all around champion Yul Molander of 5280 is in 3rd.

In the senior division, Jesse Glenn of SCATS leads the all around with 87.95 and Orlando Metro's Jake Martin sits in 2nd with 87.55. Future Michigan gymnast Adrian De Los Angeles of SCATS sits in 3rd with 87.350, a full point lower than his all around score at the Regional Championships.

In the level 10 team competition, SCATS won their 2nd title in a row and their guys helped Region 1 (comprised of CA, NV, AZ, and HI) win the team titles in both age divisions.

The format
: For those familiar with the girl's JO Championships, the format for the boy's Championships is much different. They compete multiple days - There's a full day of preliminary competition for both level 10 (Thursday) and level 9 (Friday). Saturday are the all around finals and the individual event semifinals, then the meet concludes on Sunday with event finals (top 6 per event). The team champion is crowned on the prelim day. This prepares the guys for USA Championships and international competitions where athletes are expected to compete multiple times over a few days. And of course, the men's JO program uses the elite FIG scoring.
