Arizona GymCats Top Iowa State Cyclones Despite Depleted Lineup
The Arizona GymCats dominated in their second home meet of the season with a 195.850 to 194.325 win over the Iowa State Cyclones at McKale Memorial Center and improved to 5-1 overall as they enter Pac-12 Conference play this week.

Both the Arizona GymCats and Iowa State Cyclones were missing key gymnasts in their lineups due to injuries entering Saturday's dual meet in Tucson, AZ. However, Arizona proved that overcoming adversity is just one of the many characteristics that this 2017 team encompasses.
The host GymCats dominated in their second home meet of the season with a 195.850 to 194.325 win over the Cyclones at McKale Memorial Center and improved to 5-1 overall as they enter Pac-12 Conference play this week.
To kick off the competition on the vault, the Cats only put up five gymnasts in the lineup due to missing junior Madison Cindric and senior Selena Felix-Terrazas. But Arizona remained steady thanks to a pair of outstanding performances by freshmen, including Jenny Leung's 9.750 and Heather Swanson's 9.775.

Meanwhile on bars, the Cyclones struggled to launch the first event of the evening, despite veterans Haylee Young and Meaghan Sievers both earning solid 9.850s for their routines, which tied for the third-highest score on the event.
Moving on to the second event, Arizona "swung" its way into some high numbers, earning a season high of 49.225 on the uneven bars. With some dynamic release moves and multiple stuck dismounts, sophomore Haylie Hendrickson and freshman Christina Berg earned career highs of 9.875. Sophomore Danielle Spencer tallied a 9.850.
Sievers, a former NCAA vault qualifier, put up a 9.850 to take first place on the bars for Iowa State, which showed no signs of giving up with a 48.525 total.
Going into the third rotation Arizona had a 97.800 to 96.825 lead over Iowa State, and the Cats shined by hitting 6 of 6 routines. Sophomore Skylar Sheppard showcased a near-flawless routine for a new career high of 9.850. Senior Krysten Howard had the crowd and judges in awe with her unique mount and clean set to earn a 9.825

The Cyclones displayed a combination of big tumbling passes and some upbeat choreography in their third rotation. Once again Young dominated the floor with a 9.90 -- the highest score of the competition.
Coming off the momentum of the third rotation, the Cats showcased several new routines and some bigger scores with Kennedy Schneider earning a 9.875 with her sassy routine and a team score of 49.075. For the final rotation on beam, once again Young led the Cylones with a score 9.825 to round out a solid score of 48.625.
