Beth Tweddle on the Emotional Decision to Walk Away from Gymnastics

Oct 1, 2013

Beth Tweddle is an absolute legend in Great Britain. She was a true pioneer for British Gymnastics as the first gymnast from the United Kingdom to win a medal at the European Championships or World Championships, and the first female gymnast from the United Kingdom to win a medal at the Olympic Games. Tweddle is a three-time Olympian, competing in the 2004 Athens, 2008 Beijing, and 2012 London Olympic Games. Finally, during the uneven bars finals in London, she was able to clinch a bronze medal - her first Olympic medal - in front of the home crowd. It was a truly magical moment. Tweddle is a triple world champion, having won on uneven bars in 2006, floor in 2009, and uneven bars in 2010. In August of 2013, Tweddle made the difficult decision to hang up her grips and officially retire from the sport. Tweddle talks about the emotions surrounding her decision and how finally winning an Olympic medal helped bring closure to her storied career.
