Tight Mind Monday: The Power of Intention

Doc Ali’s Tight Mind Monday 11-28-16: Intention

Many teachers have told us that the entire universe is made out of energy and when you harness that energy you can make thoughts, ideas, and dreams into reality. So how do you do that? One way is to utilize the power of setting intention. Intention is anchoring your mind like a laser beam on whatever it is you want to make happen. When your mind darts from idea to idea, it’s difficult to create anything that you want. It’s as if you are wandering around in a dark room, banging into objects, and never moving in a goal-oriented direction. Setting intention is like turning on a bright light. When you set your mind steadfastly on what you want, you are able to move directly towards your goals.

Here are some Tight Mind Tips this week for the power of intention:

1. Set intention before every turn you take. Use a cue word and say it inside your head during the turn. Some would say, “a turn without intention is a wasted turn”. I think every turn can move you forward, but a turn with intention will help you make the correction FASTER!  Use a simple intention setter like “squeeze”, “push”, or “tight” or whatever correction your coaches want you to make. Coaches, don’t hesitate to ask your athletes “what is your intention for this turn?

2. Set intention before every practice. As you walk into the gym, take a deep breath and say, “Today my intention is to….”  It might be to be more confident, aggressive, or consistent. Setting intention for your practice helps focus your workout.

3. Set intention for your season. Pick a goal and put it somewhere you can see it everyday. The more you see it, the more likely you will do whatever it takes to make it happen. Put it as your screen saver, or on a whiteboard and state your season intention every day.

Setting intention is an important stepping stone to reaching your goals. But remember intention without action is just a fantasy. This week, set your intention every turn, every practice, and for the season. Then watch how the pieces fall into place.
