Tight Mind Monday: Noticing Your Blessings

Doc Ali’s Tight Mind Monday 11-21-16: Blessed

I continue to be amazed at the connection between psychology and biology. Recently there have been many studies on the biology of gratitude. These studies have shown that when you notice your blessings specific neural circuits are activated. These circuits trigger your bliss transmitters which are dopamine and serotonin. These neural transmitters help you feel happy and content.

It gets even better, the more you stimulate those brain centers the stronger those circuits become. Soon, your body will purposely look for more things to be grateful for and fire your bliss chemicals! This becomes an ongoing cycle and before you know it, you’re a positive, gratitude machine!

Here are some Tight Mind Tips this week for noticing your blessings:

1. Keep a joy journal. At the end of the day, write down three things you feel grateful for. Studies have shown if you do this for 21 days in a row, it will significantly increase your level of optimism.

2. Express yourself! Tell someone they are a blessing to you, or write them a note. That not only gives your biological bliss centers a boost, but it helps theirs too.

3. Have a rampage of appreciation to turn around a bad day. If your struggling, stop feeding the negative. Say to yourself, STOP, take a deep breath, and then quickly remind yourself of five things you are grateful for in this moment.

Every thought you have is like a seed planted in your life and releases chemicals in your body. When we focus on the negative we are bound to see more of the same and plant seeds of weeds. When we notice our blessings they multiply as well, and before you know it, you have a garden of beautiful Thanksgiving flowers.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
