Team USA Nearly Sweeps Event Titles in Jesolo
...

Individual Event Finals at the 2013 City of Jesolo Trophy Meet took place Sunday with Team USA once again stealing the show as they earned thirteen individual medals.

Senior All Around Champion Simone Biles of Team USA/Bannon's Gymnastics won three more gold medals today in Jesolo (vault, beam, and floor), while 2012 Olympic Champion Kyla Ross of Team USA/GymMax won the uneven bars title.

Biles opened the meet with two powerful vaults to win the senior vault title over Arianna Rocca of Italy and Lexie Priessman of Team USA/Cincinnati Gymnastics. Biles has an Amanar vault that can rival McKayla Maroney's. Today, Biles debuted a second vault, yurchenko half on front layout half, proving that she too can contend for the World Vault Title. Biles averaged a 15.350 to easily win the event. [video]

Biles has also shown improved confidence on balance beam this week and edged Ross by one tenth for the event title thanks to a higher difficulty score and a stuck full twisting double tuck dismount [video]. Elisabetta Preziosa of Italy, known for her beautiful beam work, took the bronze medal.

USA, Germany, and Romania Compete Saturday in Chemnitz
USA, Germany, and Romania Compete Saturday in Chemnitz

This Saturday, Team USA will face Germany and Romania in a friendly competition in Chemnitz, Germany.

Team USA is headlined by Simone Biles of Bannon's Gymnastix, Bailie Key of Texas Dreams, and Kyla Ross of Gym-Max who each earned gold medals in last weekend's Jesolo Trophy Meet in Italy. The U.S. Seniors easily defeated Italy and Japan in the team competition while Biles and Key won the senior and junior all around titles.

The rest of the stellar U.S. squad includes Lexie Priessman and Amelia Hundley of Cincinnati Gymnastics, Brenna Dowell of GAGE, Peyton Ernst of Texas Dreams, and Maggie Nichols of Twin City Twisters. The U.S. team is currently training in Frankfurt alongside the German National team in preparation for the competition.

The German team will be decided at the conclusion of this week's training camp. The remaining German athletes will compete along with a few members of Team USA in a "mixed group".

Unfortunately, the German team will have to do without it's top ranked gymnast, European silver medalist Elisabeth Seitz who is busy finishing high school. School commitments will also keep Seitz out of April's European Championships.

Romania is reported to be sending Andreea Iridon, Andreea Munteanu, Diana Teodoru, and Paula Tudorache.

This will be the final stop of Team USA's European Tour. Ernst, however, will travel on to Japan where she will compete in the upcoming Tokoyo World Cup.

Event Info
Team USA once again enters a strong team at the 2013 Jesolo Trophy gymnastics competition in Jesolo, Italy. This year's team is led by 2012 Olympic Champion Kyla Ross who is returning from a heel bruise which kept her out of competition at the 2013 American Cup. Her senior U.S. teammates are AT&T American Cup runner-up Simone Biles of Spring, Texas/Bannon's Gymnastics; Brenna Dowell of Lenexa, Kan./Great American Gymnastics Express; Peyton Ernst of Coppell, Texas/Texas Dreams Gymnastics; Maggie Nichols of Little Canada, Minn./Twin City Twisters; and Lexie Priessman of Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Gymnastics, the reigning U.S. junior champion. Amelia Hundley of Hamilton, Ohio/Cincinnati Gymnastics, and Bailie Key of Montgomery, Texas/Texas Dreams Gymnastics, will represent the USA in the junior division. Competition begins on Saturday, March 23, with the team and all-around finals, followed by event finals on March 24.
