Stanford's Eddie Penev leads the way after the 2013 Winter Cup prelims.


LAS VEGAS, Feb. 7, 2013 – Eddie Penev of Rochester, N.Y./Stanford, posted an 83.800 in the all-around to lead the standings after the first of two preliminary sessions as the 2013 Winter Cup Challenge today at the Las Vegas (Nev.) Sports Center. Competition continues this evening at 6:30 p.m. Pacific time.

Akash Modi of Morganville, N.J./Monmouth, 83.750, and Sean Senters of Center Valley, Pa./Stanford, 83.050, finished second and third, respectively.

Penev posted his high score of the day, a 15.150, on vault, where he performed a Yurchenko half-on, front double full off. He recorded scores of 14.500, floor; 13.200, pommel horse; 13.650, still rings; 13.900, parallel bars; and 13.400, high bar to complete his competition.

Penev is currently a senior on the Stanford men's gymnastics team and has competed internationally for Bulgaria in the past. However, he is now hoping to make the U.S. National team. He's a 3-time NCAA National Champion.

Annual USA Gymnastics men's winter National Championships. Performances at the 2013 Winter Cup Challenge will help determine the 15 men who will comprise the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team through the 2013 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Hartford, Conn., Aug. 15-18.The eight members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic squad retain their spots on the national team. The remaining seven spots will be determined based on the following criteria: the top two ranked all-around athletes who are not already on the senior national team; two based on the National Team Points System; two athletes selected by the Men’s Program Committee; and one selected by the national team coordinator.
