University Of Illinois At Chicago To Cut NCAA Gymnastics Teams

The University of Illinois at Chicago men's and women's gymnastics teams were informed on August 31 that the 2018-2019 competition season would be the final year for both teams.

To show your support, you can contact Garrett Klassy, UIC Athletic Director, at gklassy@uic.edu and Michael Amiridis, UIC Chancellor at chancellor@uic.edu and ask them to reconsider their decision.

Below is an email from UIC men's head coach Charley Nelson.

Dear Friends and Alumni,

I write all of you today with extremely sad news.  After 71 seasons, 2 NCAA Championships, the highest Division I finish of any UIC sport, and a school record number of All America student-athletes, we were informed that 2018-2019 will be UIC Gymnastics' final season.

The team and coaching staff are, [understandably], very raw.  However we intend to work to reverse this decision.  As we work over the next year to sustain UIC's history and its future I will communicate to you any ways that you can help.

I hope that today's news will not be overlooked by the holiday weekend.  I would ask anyone inclined to help to reach out to your mainstream and alternative media.  This is a big story and the greater public deserves to have it reported.

You can also voice your concerns directly to the UIC Athletic Director and UIC Chancellor.  Here are their contacts:

The UIC Athletic Director's name is Garrett Klassy.  His e-mail is gklassy@uic.edu.  His  office number is: 312-996-2695.

You can also contact the UIC Chancellor, Michael Amiridis.  His e-mail is chancellor@uic.edu and his office number is 312-413-3350.

I am extremely proud of my life at UIC - athletically, academically, and, most importantly, because of the relationships I have made. Thank you for being a part of it.

Thank you,

Charley
