An exciting weekend of gymnastics began on Friday in Salt Lake City, with young gymnasts from across the nation showing some stunning routines. Find out what you missed below.

Ava San Jose & Helzy Rivera Shine In 10-11

With a difficult back handspring catch mount on beam, Ava San Jose of Paramount Elite Gymnastics set herself apart from the very start at the 2018 Hopes Classic and ended up triumphant. San Jose's beam routine was well-executed and included a nice triple acro series and multiple dance series to start her competition well, scoring a fantastic 13.200.

Other high scores of rotation one included Helzy Rivera of ENA Paramus and her first-place floor routine. Rivera began with a double pike, followed by a front tuck through to a twisting layout and finishing with just a hop back on her double tuck.

Rotation two was solid for San Jose and Rivera, as San Jose earned a 12.300 on floor while Rivera's Yurchenko vault earned a fourth-place 12.500 Yurchenko pike vault. Fifth-place all-around finisher Baylie Belman of WOGA shone on beam as her routine earned a bronze-medal-winning 12.800.

Over on bars, though, things weren't going as well as the first two gymnasts fell.

However, in the third rotation, uneven bars was a bright spot for silver all-around medalist Myli Lew of San Mateo Gymnastics, as she scored an event-winning 12.900. Meanwhile, San Jose vaulted a good Yurchenko layout and scored a 12.500 to maintain first in the all-around.

In the final rotation, San Jose solidified her victory with an 11.900 bar routine, including a Pak salto and double pike dismount. Bronze all-around medalist Camryn Nelson of Will-Moor saved her best for last as her 12.600 bar routine was good enough to also give her a bronze on the event.

Near the very end of the competition, Lew launched herself into second place in the all-around after beating San Jose's beam score, which was on top for three rotations. Lew began her beam set with a wonderful switch split leap to switch half to back tuck connection and moved into a front aerial split jump combo. Her back handspring layout step-out series was solid, and she finished her 13.500 gold medal routine with a double full dismount.

After the first session of the Hopes Classic, the 18 gymnasts listed below advanced to the Hopes Championships, which are held with the U.S. Classic later this month. The top 18 gymnasts with a qualifying score of 46.000+ at the Hopes Classic qualify to Championships.

Mya Witte Earns AA & Beam Titles In 12-13

Hitting beam was a key to success for the older age division as well. Just as San Jose hit an excellent beam set to start her quest to all-around gold, so did Mya Witte of Genie's Gymnastics. Although her routine was not perfect, she hit it well enough to earn not only the all-around title but the event title as well. Witte began with a nice back handspring layout step-out series, included a few leap connections and ended with a double tuck dismount.

Beam was a tough event in the second session, as falls scattered throughout the final three rotations. Flips gymnast Lily Pederson, however, didn't let the event faze her, as she hit her set in the final rotation. Pederson's 12.700 beam routine, in addition to her consistent performances throughout the meet, pushed her into second place in the all-around.

But even a rough beam routine couldn't stop Lundyn VanderToolen of Olympus Gymnastics from making the all-around podium. Her 13.700 bar routine in rotation four moved her up to a three-way tie for all-around bronze, helping her come back from her 10.900 beam.

Strong performances on vault and floor to begin and the end the meet, respectively, gave Jamison Sears of World Class Gymnastics a 49.900 in the all-around to tie for bronze. Pederson's Flips teammate Ella Zirbes also impressed with a solid all-around competition, highlighted by her Yurchenko full vault, to also tie for all-around bronze.
