NEW HAVEN, CT- It hasn’t been often in recent memory that Bridgeport has picked up the win over Yale but Yale is currently shorthanded and Bridgeport is loaded with specialists adding to a combination that led to the win despite Yale putting their talented core out there as well. There was good news all around though as Yale improved its scoring and had frequent started Brigitte Kivisto in the lineup for two events rather than just one as had been the case the past few weeks.
Rotation 1 opened with Yale on Bars and Bridgeport on the Vault. The Uneven bars have not been the best event this year so far and today it also brought a low score along for the ride. Though it is important to note the difficulty levels are high and there are several release moves in the routines. As scoring was concerned it was a tough day but Alina Liao picked up a 9.8 with her fast routine to anchor the rotation. Yale only competed five on this event taking away their margin for error.
Over on the Vault, Lorraine Galow picked up the top score from the fifth spot with a 9.575, Jamie DePaola and Hannah Forti weren’t far behind with 9.45 and 9.425 respectively. Kat Reitz and Miranda Der also contributed to the team score. Rotation 1 Score: UB:46.8, Yale: 43.55
In Rotation 2 Yale moved to the Vault, and had a much better time of it. The Bulldogs only had five vaulters as well but came up big with Allison Mak’s 9.525 top team score, Liao’s 9.45, Lauren Tatsuno’s 9.4, Sherry Yang’s 9.3, and Micaline Tomeo’s 9.075. It was a solid outing top to bottom.
Over on the Bars though Bridgeport was also finding success. Carissa Huggins led the team as she hit her release and stuck the landing for a 9.475, Hannah Forti had a 9.45, Galow a 9.4, and Leila Behbahani a 9.25. Shannon Cain added the fifth score. Rotation 2 Score: UB: 46.525, Yale 46.75
Yale moved to the dangerous beam for their third rotation. Despite it’s reputation Yale had actually carved out quite a few good scores on the event. Lauren Tatsuno anchored the rotation with a 9.7. Kivisto, sitting 2nd in the lineup had a 9.625. Mak and Liao both had to settle for scores just above 9. Yale only had five compete on this event as well.
On the Floor Bridgeport put up their best numbers of the day. Stephanie Morgan and Katherine Reitz’s routines both were 9.4s. Brooke Lawson hit a 9.45, Emily Repko a 9.55, Breanna Collins a 9.625, and Galow flew to a 9.75. Rotation 3 Score: UB:47.775, Yale: 46.175
Bridgeport was on a roll, though Yale was showing plenty of signs of life in what is a long season. The Purple Knights moved to Beam and their roughest rotation of the day. While four gymnasts fell below the 9 point line though three were barely, Emily Repko’s 9.55 and Breanna Collins 9.525 helped keep the score afloat.
Over on Floor Yale had a very good day. Liao didn’t let the Beam score interfere with her rocking and flipping to a 9.825. Kivisto returned to the floor in this meet and picked up right where she left off with a 9.775. Tatsuno’s 9.675 also helped the score. The steadfast Sarah Hughes was able to score a 9.375 with her routine. Sherry Yang added the last counted score. Rotation 4 Scores: UB: 45.8 Yale: 47.65
The final score was
186.9-184.125 Bridgeport.

Yale Vault
Tomeo
Tsukahara Back tuck
In order to do this maneuver a gymnast races down the runaway prior to jumping onto the springboard, but as he feet bounce off of it she turns quickly (it has to be quickly, an entire vault start to finish lasts about six seconds) so that she is now propelling herself off the vaulting horse backwards rather than forward. She tucks herself into a ball as she flips and pulls out just in time to land on the mat.
Yang
Yurchenko Back Pike
In a vault like this, a gymnast speeds towards the vault, but on approach does a round off, tumbling on the floor so that she heads into the spring board backwards. Her feet push off and she flies at the horse blind, she touches her hands to it and flies off with her body bent in an L shape or piked position. She holds that position until straightening out for the landing.
Mak
Yurchenko Back Layout
In this vault, a gymnast tumbles into a round off towards the spring board, bouncing off it and within no time at all. Despite not being able to see much she pushes off and holds her body completely straight in the air as she flips towards the ground, making sure to be right side up prior to landing.

Tsukahara back Layout
In order to do this maneuver a gymnast races down the runaway prior to jumping onto the springboard, but as he feet bounce off of it she turns quickly (it has to be quickly, an entire vault start to finish lasts about six seconds) so that she is now propelling herself off the vaulting horse backwards rather than forward. She holds her body straight and just makes sure to be in the right position to set her feet down on the mat.
Galow
Tsukahara
A gymnast enters the vault by bouncing off the springboard forward, and turning in between the time they hit the board and touch the vault so that they are going backwards off the horse. As she is flying off the horse she is twisting her body in a full circle in the short time she has before she touches down.
Der
Front Handspring, Front Pike
To do this vault a gymnast hurries towards the springboard, propels themselves off of it and pushes off hard tucking into the L shaped pike position with their body and flying forward, stretching out to land.
Yale Bars
Greenberg
Front mount to low bar, turning grip change aerial high to low transition, sole circle into front tuck off high bar.
Greenberg grabs a hold of the low bar and starts swinging circling around so that she can stand and grab the top bar, she swings up into a hand stand, and changes her grip on the bar while swinging (looks simple, it’s not), and swings back downward letting go of the top bar and doing a half twist in mid air so that she can catch the lower bar in a handstand position. She gets into position to reach the high bar again and swings over the bar on the second time around she puts herself in a piked position placing her soles on the high bar, as she swings under the bar she lets go as she rises hanging in mid air briefly before tucking into a front tuck before touch down.
Mak
Jump from back to high bar, , turn below low bar, flips from low bar to high bar. Multiple grip changes on low bar, grip change on high bar,
Mak uses the springboard to fly at the high bar she pulls herself up into a handstand and then while holding the hands in position pulls her body down into a straddled position. In that position she turns around the bar lets go as she is under the bar and uses the momentum from the swing to carry her to the low bar which she catches and swings under quickly turning her grip as she does so reversing direction. She pulls up to a handstand on the low bar and continues to swing. She swings so that her stomach is circling the low bar and as she comes around she lets go flying back up towards the high bar basically doing a layout of sorts within the confines of the bars. After a grip change on the high bar she swings forward though facing backwards and lets go twisting in the air during basically a back layout off the bar.
DeJocas
Mounts from middle to behind low bar, grip change on low bar, straddled aerial transition to high bar, Tkatchev, back flyaway dismount.
DeJocas stands behind the low bar and jumps to it swinging into a handstand on the bar, and doing a grip change to change direction and she does a straddled leap from the low bar to the high bar catching and holding into a hand stand before swinging into a Tkatchev which is where a gymnast swings down under the high bar and up, lets go, and flies backwards with their legs apart back over the high bar at high speed, catching it and continuing to swing, she ends the routine by swinging twice for momentum and letting go into a back flip with her body straight before touch down.
Hughes
Mounts from front to low bar, grip change on high bar, tkatchev, back aerial straddled high to low transition, back tuck dismount.
Hughes begins by standing in front of the low bar, jumping to it and beginning to swing. She soon reaches the high bar, and swings for momentum adding in a quick pair of grip changes which move her from forward to backward facing though she still maintains her original swing rather than a direction change. She continues to swing forward into a Tkatchev, where she swings under the high bar and as she heads upward lets go flying back across the high bar and catching it. Later on she swings backward on the high bar and lets go holding a straddled position as she moves past the low bar and grabs hold swinging down and then grabbing the high bar. For a dismount she swings a couple of times for momentum during the upswing to fly up as she lets go allowing her to do a back tucked flip and then straighten for the touch down on the mat.
Liao
Mounts from behind to high bar, aerial high to low, aerial straddled low to high combo,
Liao leaps off the springboard from behind the high bar and grabs it. She swings a bit on the high bar and then swings towards the low bar letting go and doing a half turn while airborne before catching the low bar in a handstand position briefly and swinging back down under the low bar and releasing to fly upward in a straddled position to grab the high bar again all within seconds. She rounds the high bar several times before doing basically two back flips while her body is straight in the air and setting down on the mat.
UB Bars
Dulany
Mount from front to low bar, grip change on high bar, grip change on high bar, back aerial high to low transition, aerial low to high transition combo, back tuck dismount.
Dulany grabs the low bar and eventually reaches the high bar. She pulls up to a handstand on the high bar and swings several times, changing grip twice and continuing the swing. She changes grip again during an upswing and reverses direction but during the downswing switches again and moves backward letting go and doing a half flip in mid air to catch the low bar in a handstand before placing her soles on the low bar in a piked position swinging right back down and releasing in a straddled position to fly up towards the high bar. She swings several times before letting go on the upswing, doing a back tuck and landing on the mat.
Behbahani
Mount from front to low bar. Aerial straddled low to high transition, grip change into aerial high to low, back tuck dismount.
Behbahani stands in front of the low bar and jumps to it pulling herself up into a handstand and swinging down in a piked position with her feet on the bar before swinging under the low bar and letting go flying upward towards the high bar and catching it. She swings up into a hand stand and swings backward changing grip a few times before swing backwards in the air and catching the low bar. She climbs back to the high bar and gets some momentum going around until she does a back flip while tucked before landing for a dismount.
Huggins,
Mount from front to low bar, grip change on high bar into piked jaeger, aerial high to low, straddled low to high, back tuck dismount.
Huggins grabs the low bar and swings until she climbs to the high bar, there she pulls into a handstand and swings with her back facing away from the low bar, but during a downswing she changes grip so she is now facing the low bar as she does an upswing, letting go in a piked L shape doing a back flip catching the bar as the flip is complete (a piked Jaeger) and pulling herself up into a handstand before swinging down towards the low bar, letting go and turning in mid air to catch the high bar in a handstand position she pulls back up does a turn with her sole on the bar and lets go in a straddled jump from one bar to the other. She swings for speed and lets go doing a back tuck before straightening for the landing.
H. Forti
Mount from front straddling low bar and continuing onto high bar, grip change, straddled jaeger, aerial high to low, grip change grip change, back tuck dismount.
Forti runs at the low bar, jumps off a spring board, pushes off and straddles the bar and flies up to the high bar. Once there she pulls into a handstand and changes grip on a downswing so she now faces the low bar before she lets go doing a back flip in the air with her legs straddled and catching the bar again (a straddled jaeger) once complete she pulls back up swings downward lets go and does a half twist to catch the low bar, before eventually heading back to the high bar to gain momentum for the dismount. During her last swing prior to departure she does a grip change, turning on the bars in a circle before letting go for a back tucked flip off.
Galow
Mount from middle to behind low bar, grip change on low, aerial straddled low to high, grip change on high, grip change grip change, grip change, aerial high to low, back tuck dismount.
Galow jumps to the low bar from behind it and swings up to a handstand, turning on the bar and swinging up in a straddled jump to the high bar, she swings changing grip about five times and direction several times on the bar before letting go and flying back towards the low bar half turning as she does so. She gathers speed for the dismount, lets go and does a back tucked flip towards the landing.
Cain
Mount from front to low bar, back aerial high to low into handstand into straddled aerial low to high, grip change, grip change, tkatchev, grip change, back tuck dismount.
Cain leaps to the low bar from the front to start off, she then climbs up the high bar and swings briefly before swing backwards towards the low bar, letting go and doing a half flip into a handstand, she swings back down and up putting her soles to the bar in a piked position before letting go and in a straddle jump reaching the high bar. She swings twice including a grip change in a full circle before launching into a Tkatchev by letting go during an upswing sliding back over the bar in a straddled position and catching the bar. She dismounts with a full circle grip change followed by a back tuck before touching down on the blue cushion.
Exhibition
Mount from front to low bar, grip change aerial high to low, aerial low to high, sole circle into front tuck.
She stands in front of the bars and grabs the low bar, swinging up and climbing to the high bar where she changes direction prior to an aerial transition where she lets go and does a half turn. She swings a bit before getting into a piked swing, placing her feet on the low bar and swinging up, exploding off the low bar in a straddle and grabbing the high bar. She swings and puts her sole on the high bar to launch her off propelling her into a forward front tucked flip.
Yale Beam
Yang
Climbs atop beam and does some balancing at beam level, back handspring walkout, back layout stepout, switch split jump, side split, side split, handstand, back scale, changement, sheep jump, pirouette, back pike off end of the beam.
Yang climbs atop the middle of the beam and immediately does a split, she then adds some dance elements before lining up for a back handspring walkout, back layout step out combo. Essentially this involves a gymnast flipping backward and grabbing the four inch beam before their legs land, and then with the new momentum flipping up in the air with no hands and moving one foot than the other to the beam and landing on the narrow surface. She adds some dance before leaping into the air swinging her leg forward then pulling it backwards and swinging the other forward into a split all within about a second before landing back on the beam, and nearly immediately taking off again and straddling sending both legs straight out to the side, and upon landing immediately repeating the maneuver. Every jump like that is an opportunity to fall. She adds more dance elements before pulling herself up into a handstand. She later stands on one leg pulling the other straight up behind her into a scale and holds her balance. Moving through the beam she leaps up slightly, moves her feet back and forth in a changement and lands again. Not long after she jumped upward curling both her legs behind her and looking to the sky in a sheep jump and lands blindly back on the beam. She spins on the beam in a full turn which needless to say looks it easier than it must be. How many people can do a full turn on pavement without stumbling slightly. She walks to the end of the beam and jumps swinging her legs up in a pike and back flipping to the floor for a dismount.
Kivisto
Climbs to middle of the beam, does some balance dance work at beam level, back handspring walkout, back layout stepout, switch split into ring jump, switch split, side split, back flip, pirouette, front full twist off end of beam.
Kivisto climbs to the beam and dances at the beam level before rising to her feet and adding in other dance elements. She flips backward and grabs the four inch beam before her legs land, and then with the new momentum flips up in the air with no hands and moves one foot than the other to the beam to land on the narrow surface.
(back handspring walkout, back layout step out combo). Her dance continues as she rises onto her tiptoes to shoe balance. She moves into a leap forward swinging one leg forward and then pulls it back while the other leg moves forward. The original leg bends back into a ring jump where one leg is extended the other bent before she lands one leg on the beam. She dances some more before replicating her leap before only not bending her leg behind her. She lands and immediately leaps up in a straddle sending each leg straight out to the side. As soon as her feet land she flips backward again in a perilous combo of jumps. She does a full turn on one tiptoed foot and later balances on both before running towards the end of the beam and doing a full front twist off to the mat.
Mak
Stands at the end of the beam and uses the spring board to give her a push off to launch into a Homma which is doing flares on beam. Flares are normally only found on the pommel horse of men’s gymnastics. Illusion, split jump, aerial cartwheel into back handspring walkout, switch split leap, tour jete, back pike off end of the beam.
Mak mounts the beam in a very unique way, borrowing a skill from Men’s gymnastics. She stands atop the spring board at the side of the end of the beam. She pushes off slightly and grabs hold, swinging her split legs upward. She literally swinging around herself as she moves her legs basically in a circle around her and over the beam while she holds her body up off the apparatus. After completing three turns she moves down to the beam to continue the routine. The move called flares in men’s gymnastics and normally found on the pommel horse, is known as the Homma when performed on the Beam. It is one of the few high powered elements which gives the crowd time to build the anticipation and Mak’s mount is normally followed by a wave of clapping. Standing up on the beam she dances before balancing on one leg and turning her body swinging the other leg up in the process and straightening it out so that at one point her body forms a straight leg line. She completes the turn and jumps into the air pulling one leg in front of her and the other behind her for a split and then quickly bringing her legs back into a landing position. She dances more before readying for a move where she basically does a turning flip moving one leg over and then the other while not touching the floor. She then does a back handspring walkout, grabbing the beam and pulling one leg then the other down. She later does a splitting leap only this time she moves one foot out first but draws it behind her as the other foot moves forward, before she lands. She follows this up with a tour jete where she does a similar leap but does half turn while doing it. This is all done on a four inch beam. She ends the routine by running to the end jumping up, pulling her body into an L shaped pike position and back flipping to the floor.
Liao
Mount to middle of the beam followed by some lower beam dance elements, turning wolf jump, one hands back handspring walkout, back layout stepout, spins on one foot while leg is bent and other leg is straight at an angle, dances low on the beam, hitch kick, switch split into side split, , round off into a back twisting dismount. (I believe she gets around twice but I’m not entirely sure.)
Liao climbs atop the beam and dances at beam level before standing. She continues to dance but soon leaps into the air doing a full turn while sticking one leg straight out and bending the other next to it (a wolf jump). Soon after landing she flips backward and grabs the four inch beam with one hand before her legs lands, and then with the new momentum flips up in the air with no hands and moves one foot than the other to the beam to land on the narrow surface. (one handed back handspring walkout, back layout step out combo). She dances some more and then pulls down to beam level. She extends one leg to her right and bends her right leg pivoting on her right foot in a full circle while holding the pose. She continues at dance at beam level before a hitch kick where she basically pulls one bent leg in front of her and then the other during the course of a jump. She follows that with a jump where she moves on leg forward then back but the result in a split where each leg is extended to her side in a split, all before touching back down on the beam. She prepares and does an aerial round off where she turns in mid air but doesn’t touch her hands down as a round off would involve. Her dismount follows more dancing as she uses the full beam as a runway, doing a round off flipping backwards and twisting it looks like twice off the end.
Tatsuno
Front flip onto end of the beam, wolf jump, pirouette, switch split leap into back flip, back handspring into back flip, dance work at beam level, changement, changement into split jump, back pike off end of beam.
Tatsuno runs at the beam from the far end, propels herself off the spring board does a full flip and lands on top. Immediately following landing with a leap into the air where she shoots one leg out and bends the other next to it for a wolf jump. She holds her body straight and does a spin on tiptoes. Soon afterward she leaps forward extending one leg and then pulling behind her, moving the other leg forward in the process. She follows that up with a back flip. Later on she flips backwards putting both hands down and pushing her to complete the move and propel her into a second hands free piked flip, in which her legs are straight and she’s in an L position. She does a changement where she briefly leaps up moving her legs forward and backward and touching down before jumping up into a split and landing. She ends the routine with a run off the end of the beam jumping up and back flipping in a pike to the floor.
UB Beam
Scott
Mount to middle of the beam, dance elements at beam level, back handspring walkout, back layout stepout, pirouette, switch split leap, back flip, side split, turning tuck jump, back twist off beam to middle.
Scott climbs aboard the beam and sits before doing some beam level dancing. She flips backward and grabs the four inch beam before her legs land, and then with the new momentum flips up in the air with no hands and moves one foot than the other to the beam to land on the narrow surface. She spins on one leg around the beam for a pirouette. She then throws a combo of a leap where she swings one leg forward and then back while pulling the other leg forward into a split, and follows her landing of that jump with a back flip. After some more dancing she jumps into the air sending each leg out straight into a side split, and follows that landing with a jump where she tucks her legs up and turns in the air. She dismounts from the middle of the beam with a back twist from the middle to the floor beside the apparatus. This is started by swinging her leg up (a gainer) which gets the momentum going.
Collins
She stands at side of the beam and jumps forward and grabs the beam doing a handstand with her shoulders resting on the beam, she does dance elements and rolls down to the beam, pirouette, switch split leap, sheep jump, aerial round off, round off, split jump, turning split, tour jete, front twists off end of the beam, I believe 1 and one half.
Collins utilizes an interesting mount in that she stands facing the beam from the side, and jumps somewhat flipping as she rolls on the beam into a handstand. Her arms are actually laying on the beam as she holds her position. She then flexes her legs and rolls out of the position to eventually stand. She spins once on one leg for a pirouette, and
She performs a combination of jumps when she swings one leg forward and then back while pulling the other leg forward into a split (a switch split jump), and follows that with a sheep jump which involves leaping into the air stretching both legs behind her and bending them and throwing her head back so her landing’s pretty much blind. After some more dancing she does an aerial round off with no hands where she basically goes from forward to backward without touching the beam. She follows with a conventional round off and more dance moves. She adds a normal split jump without switching legs and then does a split while turning. She adds a switch split jump which involves a turn called a tour jete. She ends the routine by running towards the end of the beam and doing what looks to be one and one half front twists in the short time it takes her to flip to the mat.
Lawson
Climbs to middle of the beam, and performs dance elements, switch split leap, side split jump, wolf jump, turning split jump, back handspring walkout, back layout stepout, pirouette, round off into back tuck dismount.
Lawson climbs onto the beam in the middle and performs some dancing. Later she adds a combination of jumps when she swings one leg forward and then back while pulling the other leg forward into a split (a switch split jump) and also does a side split where she leaps up and her legs stretch out to either side while she is facing forward. Not soon afterward she adds a wolf jump where she jumps extends one leg and bends the other, and I believe a turning split or wolf jump immediately afterward. Lawson also performs a back handspring walkout into a back layout step out combo which involves a flipping salto backward where she grabs the beam with her hands, and then with the new momentum flips up in the air with no hands and moves one foot than the other to the beam to land on the narrow surface for the second flip. She adds a spin towards the end of the routine and ends with a dismount of running forward doing a round off and tucking during a back flip towards the landing.
McAvity
Jumps to middle of the beam and performs dance elements, switch split into side split jump, changement, pirouette, aerial round off, aerial round off back the other way, switch split leap, side split, she steps towards the end of the beam and does a facing forward back pike off.
McAvity jumps onto the middle of the beam and dances to open things up. In a one-two punch of jumps she swings one leg forward and then back while pulling the other leg forward into a split (a switch split jump) and also does a side split where she leaps up and her legs stretch out to either side while she is facing forward. She later does a changement which involves a hop of the beam and moving each leg into the other’s position and back. She also spins for a pirouette soon afterward. She then adds an aerial round off one way, and then the other way in rapid succession. The no hands flips are tricky on their own but add a different level of difficulty added together. She adds another switch split lea and side split combo and dismounts by walking towards the end of the beam and jumping in order to pike her body into an L shape and back flip to the mat below.
Repko
Mounts to end of the beam and holds position with a low straddle, front layout stepout, back flip, switch split leap, split, back flip, turning wolf jump, pirouette, front twist off beam I believe with 1 and one half twists.
Repko climbs to the end of the beam and holds herself up in a low straddle position. She performs a front layout step out which is basically a no hands leap forward but instead of landing on two legs one lands before the other. She follows immediately with a back flip. She swings one leg forward and then back while pulling the other leg forward into a split (a switch split jump), follows that instantly with a jump into a normal split, and then does a back flip right after that for a triple sequence. She dances on the beam for a bit before a turning wolf jump is initiated involving a jump extending one leg and bending the other in mid air before straightening before landing in the short period of the jump. A spin on one leg would follow and she ends the routine with a front twisting dismount I believe consisting of one and one half twists.
Galow
Mounts to about middle of the beam, does some low dance work and straddling. back handspring walkout, back layout stepout, switch split leap, split jump, back flip, pirouette, turning split jump, round off into a back twist off the beam.
Galow mounts to close to the middle of the beam, and dances with some lower beam work. She also performs a back handspring walkout into a back layout step out combo which involves a flipping salto backward where she grabs the beam with her hands, and then with the new momentum flips up in the air with no hands and moves one foot than the other to the beam to land on the narrow surface for the second flip. Following she executes a sequence of three jumps. She swings one leg forward and then back while pulling the other leg forward into a split (a switch split jump), follows that instantly with a jump into a normal split, and then does a back flip right after that. She spins on one leg for a pirouette, and also does a split while turning in the air. Her dismount starts with a round off and ends as she lifts off doing a back twist off the apparatus.
Exhibition
Mounts to middle of the beam. Pirouette, aerial round off, round off, split jump, turning split jump, side split, back pike off end of the beam.
She mounts to the middle of the beam, and performs the pirouette spin. She adds a round off where she flips changing her position but does not touch the beam, she follows with a traditional round off, she leaps into the air and does a split and immediately follows with a turning split jump as well. After dance elements she adds a side split where she is actually in line with the beam, as most are perpendicular to it. Her dismount is a back piked L shape flip after leaping off the end of the beam.
Yale Floor
Mak (A big bandish mix of Big Spender and the Pink Panther)
front handspring* front layout, front layout.
Pirouette, turning split jump.
round off, back handspring, back twist.
Spinning on one leg, switch split, tour jete, illusion, turning handstand
front handspring*, front twist
Mak takes to the floor with a big band version of the Pink Panther theme which also seems to integrate themes from the song “Big Spender” though this could just be similarities. The background music utilizes a strong use of horns and the usual saxophone element of the theme. The song essentially provides numerous flourishes during the more difficult elements and settles down during the slower parts of the routine.
She opens with a brief dance setting up the first tumbling pass. She races across the floor does a front handspring to gain speed and launches into a flip holding her body in a straight (layout position) and on landing repeats the maneuver.
She performs a spin, and follows it by leaping into a turning split. Tumbling pass two follows with her using a round off to keep up her speed but changing direction launching backward into a back handspring and from there she flies upward twisting her body fully around during the back flip before landing as a music flourish accompanies it.
Her final dance sequence begins by her standing one leg tiptoed and extending the other leg straight in front of her and doing a turn. It’s one of the moves which looks simple but needs precision to be carried out. She jumps up and shoots one leg forward before pulling it behind her and pushing the other out for a split (switch split) and follows that with an identical maneuver except that it adds a turn during the half second she’s in the air for a Tour Jete. She swings one of her legs up and straight while balancing on the second one (an illusion) and pulls into a handstand and while holding straight does a slight turn into several elements on the floor itself.
She ends with a tumbling pass where she uses a front handspring to get going and then launches into a full front twist during her brief time in the air.
Yang (Theme to Shaft slightly remixed)
round off, back handspring, double back pike.
Switch split, tour jete into ring leap.
front handspring, front layout, front twist.
front handspring*, front twist, front pike.
Yang employs the iconic Shaft theme as her background piece, though it has a mix of drums and an orchestral theme somewhat underlying it to help keep the pace moving quickly. The buildup that comes through the piece flows through tumbling pass one though the flourish hits during pass two, and settles down prior to pass three where the music flares again as she touches down. Her routine which involves more action than the actual opening to he movie utilizes the mix of the song to match the floor activity.
Yang gets right to the tumbling as she races diagonally across the mat, doing a round off to position herself, adding a back handspring and blasting off, pulling her body into an L-shaped pike and holding the position as she flips twice before touching landing.
She leaps into the air swinging one leg forward and then back while the other leg flies out into a split position. She follows this with a similar move only she turns in the process and bends the back leg resulting in a tour jete ring leap. She dances along the floor approaching the corner laps into a front handspring, holding her body straight as she flips again and launches again twisting in a full circle before stepping down on the blue. She adds more numerous dance elements to set up for pass 3 and runs forward hits a front handspring, does a full twist in the air, and immediately jumps up piking her body forward for a flip to wrap things up.
Hughes (A piano based dance piece, sounds very appropriate for ballroom dance, it adds in some guitar as well.)
front handspring*, front layout, front layout
Turning split jump, side split jump,
round off, back handspring, back twist.
Pirouette, turning split, turning wolf jump
front handspring*, front twist.
Hughes employs a piece which invokes piano to set the stage and uses guitar to move it along all the while there is a back beat to it, perhaps salsa like. The fast moving piece moves well enough to support the tumbling but also the slower dance elements.
She gets into the tumbling doing a front handspring to set up two front flips where she holds her body straight in the laid out position. She moves from the corner and does a split while turning in the air and continues turning this time extending each leg to the side for a side split. She dances prior to the lineup for the second pass. She does a round off to change position, adds a back handspring and launches into a back full twist.
The interlude gives her a chance to add in more dancing including a pirouetted turn. She does another split in the air while turning lands and leaps up extends a leg and bends the other at its side for a wolf jump while turning as well.
Her last past begins with a front handspring and a twist to land and end the routine.
Tatsuno (Not Constantinople) (A drumish, big bandish version of the song, not the They Might be Giants version)
Front flip, round off, back handspring, double back tuck.
Switch side split jump, turning wolf jump.
round off, back handspring, whip back, 1 and one half twists I believe.
Turning wolf jump.
round off, back handspring, back 1 and one half twists.
Each year generally a Yale gymnast has a quirky piece of music that stands out as rarely heard. In this case Tatsuno is utilizing a version of the song “Not Constantinople” popularized by the group They Might be Giants, though the song existed for quite a while before. This piece relies more on a big band swing feel to it, with horns and drums as compared to the more contemporary version. The mix provides flourishes for the passes, but also airy interludes for the dancing.
As drums sound Tatsuno speeds across the mat does a front flip half through, follows it with a round off to change the way she’s facing and does a back handspring. She flies up in the air and tucks her body for two straight flips before landing in the corner. As the music turns light she dances to the center of the mat. She jumps up swinging one leg forward and then bring it back, but instead of a straight slip her legs ended up extended to each side for a side split. She lands and immediately adds a turning jump where one leg is stretched out and the other bent beside it (wolf jump) The dance continues as the quirky music continues. Tumbling pass 2 proceeds at a slower pace as the music nearly whistles. She dose a round off, back hand spring, whips backward in a flip, and then launches into one and a half twists to end up facing forward again. She adds in more dance, throws in a second turning wolf jump. The drums build as the theme flourishes and she does a round off to set up a back handspring and another one and a half twists for the ending.
Kivisto (Big swing band )
front handspring*, two twists.
Switch split leap, side split, straight leap into the air and jump to the floor.
round off, back handspring, two twists.
Turning wolf turning wolf.
round off, back handspring, two twists.
Kivisto’s music begins with a drum cymbal underlying a horn but within seconds an entire swing band has joined in setting the underlying pace for the fast moving routine, sending rumbling sounds and horns through the gym. The horn gets more jazzy towards the end and the band joins in for a clamorous finale before the horn finishes up the piece and the routine.
Kivisto warms up with a dance as the horn plays and sets up quickly for a front handspring into two front twists. She dances across the floor, swings a leg forward and then back replacing it with the other leg for a switch split, she jumps up again this time sending the legs to her side, and then launches again into a straight leap into the air and to the floor. Once on the mat she adds numerous dance elements before rolling to set up the corner tumbling though adding some more dancing before racing into a round off, followed by a back handspring and two back twists. Her dance continues with a pair of wolf jumps while she turns. A wolf is extending one leg out and bending the other next to it in mid flight. She makes her way to the corner, and runs toward the center, leaping into a round off, adding a back handspring and lifting off for two twists. She hurriedly adds in several more dance moves on her way to the sent and the finish as the music closes things out.
Liao (Heavy metal rock)
round off, back handspring, <2 and one half twists>, front flip.
pirouette,
round off, back handspring, double back pike.
round off, one half twist, twist.
Liao utilizes heavy rock for her routines. Before she used Metallica and this music is very similar in nature. It provides a hard powerful flourish during her opening piece, then settles into a slow beat during the her dance sequence prior to pass 2 which she completes during the slow pace and in a little time is in the corner for the third pass where a guitar picks up the pace for the finale all the while with ominous metal rock continuing. The music invokes the power of the tumbling going on throughout.
She begins quickly dancing into the corner. She races forward does a round off and then a back handspring to get things moving before lifting off into two and a half twists during her flight which lasts less than one second, and adds a punch front flip immediately.
She dances on the floor and performs a switch split sending one leg forward and back with the other stretching out to complete the split, she immediately launches into a jump where she straddles in the air lying flat and drops to the ground. The dancing continues as she spins and jumps in the air again continuing to make the trip from one end of the floor to the other. She moves into pass 2, doing a round off, handspring, and then pikes her body into an L shape doing two rotations and touching down. She works her way to another corner shortly to line up pass 3 and jumps into a round off, she keeps going adding a half twist in the air and then a full twist to cap things off. She rolls forward and strikes her finishing pose.

front handspring* full twist, front layout
Tour jete into turning wolf jump.

Turning wolf jump.
round off, back handspring, 1 and one half twists, front flip.
Morgan utilizes a rock mix involving four or five pieces including “Walk this Way”, basically having a piece for each pass and interlude.
Morgan opens with some dance elements at mat level and spins on one leg in the corner before speeding across the floor doing a front handspring and launching herself into a full twist in the air, following that landing with a front flip with her body completely straight. She dances towards another corner and along the way jumps into the air swinging one leg forward and then back replacing it with a straight other leg to form a split, all the while turning (tour jete) immediately on finishing she leaps up and extending one leg and bending the other one beside it (wolf jump) all while continuing to turn in the motion started by the original jump. She dances into the corner and lines up for tumbling pass two. Gathering speed she jumps into a round off and now facing the other direction does a back handspring followed by one and half twists while airborne before landing. As the music changes she spins across the floor and does another turning wolf jump and grooves a bit before pass 3. She runs and does another round off, adds a back handspring, and blasts into one and a half twists. Now facing forward she quickly flips forward in a tucked position to wrap up the routine.
Reitz (Irna)
round off, back handspring, 1 and one half twist, front layout.
Turn with one leg extended, turning split jump, turning wolf jump.
round off, one half twist, front layout.
Switch side split, turning side split,
front handspring*, twist.
Reitz employs the mysterious song Irna which is often used. It has an ominous overture, that flows with the routine, midway through drums join the piece allowing for momentum to build. While ominous the song has an airy feel which goes with the flips and dancing combined.
Reitz begins her routine lying face down on the mat and begins to move rolling and then standing, soon ending up in the corner for a tumbling pass. She does a round off and follows it with a back handspring propelling herself backwards and into one and half twists in the air. Upon landing facing forward she flips forward holding her body straight in the layout position. As the music swells she enters a dance sequence, turning on one leg with the other extended and doing a side split in the air while turning, followed immediately by a turning wolf jump where she leaps up extends a leg and bends her other leg next to it all while spinning in the air in less than a second. She is soon back in a corner and tumbling doing a round off, half twisting in the air to face forward again and flipping forward in a straight laid out position. She dances all around the floor and leaps up swinging a leg forward and back and bringing the other one out into a side split, she jumps again spinning with her legs split to each side. Her final tumbling pass involves a front handspring and a full twist in the air to land forwards. As drums sound she jumps into a turning handstand and swings down to the floor, dancing a bit more before posing to end the jumpy routine.
Repko (Explosive, and Senorita by Bond.
front handspring*, full twist, front pike
Split leap, split leap
front handspring* front layout front layout
2 turns on one leg with one leg extended
Turning wolf jump, turning tuck jump
Front 1 one half twists.
Repko utilizes “Bond” music and that group mixes classical music instruments with more contemporary beats to create a synergy. In the first piece, Explosive, amidst a dramatic beat, a violin also accompanies the piece. At the midpoint the piece changes to Senorita, a different violin piece which is slower and allows for the interlude in between passes. Explosive revs up again for the finish mixing dramatic background with airy violins in a fitting metaphor for the sport.
Repko starts thing off as dramatic music plays, and matches her movement to the powerful theme playing including a serious facial expression. She jumps into a front handspring and follows it with a full twist and front pike in rapid succession. She moves across the floor doing two split jumps in a row before adding a back walkover with her arms actually bent on the floor before powering into the second tumbling pass of a front handspring and two flips with her legs straight. She lands and dances across the floor cracking a smile as the music transitions into the slower lighter “Senorita” she adds numerous dance elements before balancing on one leg, extending the other straight out and turning twice around without stopping. She continues her dancing and leaps into the air extending one leg and bending the other for a wolf jump, turning along the way, she lands and immediately leaps again bending both legs and turning in the air again. She ends her dance sequence with a dramatic pose as the dramatic “Explosive” kicks back in and her movements turn serious. She races forward and with no handspring lead in blasts off doing one and a half twists in the air and landing. She moves to the center of the mat, drops to it and poses pointing to the sky as her music clashes to an ending.
Collins (Frankenstein by the Edgar Winter Group)
Front 1 one half twists, back handspring walkout, back layout stepout
Pirouette, turning wolf jump
round off, back handspring, 1 and one half twists
Switch split leap, turning split jump, turning tuck jump
Front 1 one half twists
The iconic rock song Frankenstein sits as the backdrop to Collins and serves not only to have an exciting theme behind her, but it also slips into a sort of weird spacey beat with drums in the middle of the routine to allow for the interlude before the main theme kicks up into gear again for her third pass.
With only a slight body wiggle Collins steps to the corner to begin her pass as the rock tune gears up. She does a unique set of moves as she leaps up and does one and half twists with no handspring lead in. She immediately lands and does a back handspring, walking out of the move and then flipping backwards with one leg chasing the other around for a layout step out. She moves across the floor, performs a turning pirouette I believe getting around twice on one leg and then continues to spin launching into a wolf jump where she juts one leg out straight and brings her bent second leg up next to it. She lands and dances in tune to the drums the song has slid into. The music gets somewhat odd and spooky as he takes off in pass two doing a round off, back handspring and then one and half twists to end up facing forward. The drums go wild as she moves across the floor in a wild fashion dancing back and forth before launching into a combination of three leaps. She starts out by swinging a leg forward and then back and switching with the other leg, she then turns in the air while doing a split and lands before taking off immediately and tucking her legs under her briefly while turning. Some more dancing follows as the main rock theme starts back up. She settles into the corner runs forward and does one and half twists with no other move prior before dropping to the ground dancing while lying down and ending in her finishing pose as the music stops.
Galow (Nour el Ain)
Pirouette, turning wolf jump
round off, back handspring, double back tuck
front handspring*, front layout, front layout
Switch split into ring jump, tour jete
round off, back handspring, back 2 twists
As the music begins with a soft guitar Galow unleashes numerous dance moves and moves into a pirouette turning twice on one leg on tiptoe and then continuing the spin by leaping up throwing one leg out and bending the other for a turning wolf jump. She moves to the floor for several more elements before pass one. The guitar picks up speed and drums kick in as she runs entering a round off, back handspring then exploding into a double back tuck. The amazingly good sounding accordion starts up as she smiles, does a little dance in a small circle in the same corner and hurries into pass 2. She does a front handspring followed by two front flips in a row holding her body straight. She immediately does two variants of the switch split leap, that leap is when the gymnast extends one leg in front but then brings it behind her moving the other forward to complete the split. She first does this leaping and bending the back leg at the end to create a ring jump. Immediately upon landing she jumps into a spinning version of the leap called a tour jete. She drops to the floor and moves along it on her knees before spinning. The music settles slightly before speeding up in anticipation. Her third pass starts with a round off, then a back handspring, followed by two full twists in the air landing. She dances some more eventually ending on the mat grasping her bent leg in her hand as the music taps to a close.
The middle eastern flavored song complete with accordion evokes a party and dance atmosphere and goes along at a steady albeit it not fast pace for her opening pass
, as an opening piano and drum beat gears up for pass one. The song really gets going for pass two and settles down afterward during the interlude before the drums and theme kick back up for her final pass. It’s a well balanced song for the routine.
Lawson (I believe it begins with a remix of a classical piece, moves into a hip hop piece I recognize but can’t place, and then rounds up with a bit from Hurricane 2000)
Front flip, round off, back handspring, double back tuck.
Switch split leap, turn on one leg.
round off, back handspring, double back pike.
Pirouette, turning wolf jump, turning split jump
front handspring*, front layout, front layout.
Lawson’s floor music is a mix, beginning with a remix of the classical piece “Winter by Vivaldi” I believe for her first two passes and the ensuing and then sliding into a contemporary hip hop tune for her second dance sequence, another contemporary piece which sure sounds like a remix of Hurricane 2000 seems to be in the background of her final pass.
Lawson opens with a bang as she starts her tumbling pass with a front flip in a tucked position, does a round off, a back handspring and then a double back tucked flips to finish the busy sequence off. She does a switch split leap where she jumps into a split position but switches legs in the process. She makes her way to the corner and begins her second tumbling run, doing a round, back handspring and two back flips this time holding her body in the L-shaped pike position. She spins twice on one leg and dances in the middle of the mat across towards the corner as a hip hop song takes over in the mix. She jumps into the air spinning and extending one leg while bending the other next to it for a wolf. She adds a side split turning as she does so. She moves to the corner snapping as the music does as well backed by piano. A front handspring starts her 3rd pass, and two flips in a laid out straight position follow wrapping up the routine.

front handspring*, front layout, front layout.
She uses a fast paced metallic technoish dance piece, though it slows midway through the routine to fit the interlude.
She begins lying on the floor waiting for the dance theme to start up. She slow climbs to her knees and then to her feat moving to the beat and before long is doing a round off followed by a back handspring, one and half twists, and a front flip in an L-shaped piked position. The speedy beat continues, she does a split switching leg position in the process and ending in a side split, and follows it with a side split while turning in the air, before also doing a wolf jump (where one leg is extended the other bent beside it) in the air.) also while turning. She spins twice around before backing into the corner. She runs into a front half spring and one and a half twists followed. The music changes pace but maintains its metallic almost siren like feel and she moves directly to the beat. Her last pass ends with a front handspring, front flip in a straight position, and then another. She drops to the ground with one leg extended and stretches to the floor to close the routine up.
