The Weekend Ahead in New England

(Scores from Troester)
Gymnastics doesn’t need storylines or scores to be interesting, the routines themselves are worthy of attention, but for those who like storylines and the competitions for the score there’s plenty this weekend in the northeast, with five meets in one day, including four at the same time, and two in the same city. EAGL teams trying to make their way into Regionals will meet up in New Hampshire. The four Ivy League teams will hold their annual meet to determine the Ivy Classic champions at Yale. Temple makes the trip up from Philadelphia to take on Southern Connecticut. High flying Bridgeport will meet Rutgers for the second time in as many weeks and Alaska will cross quite a few time zones to take part in the meet as well. Up in Cambridge, D3 Brockport and MIT will have their last regular season meet before ECAC championships next week and the Engineers will celebrate senior day in their last home meet of the year.

The Ivy Classic: Saturday, February 28th, 2009 1pm, Lee Amphitheater, Yale University, New Haven, CT
(Yale Routines List) (Brown Routines List)

It’s always interesting when the four Ivy League gymnastics teams get together. Cornell has the highest team and average scores of the year, though all the Ivy teams are relatively close scoring wise when they field full lineup. It also looks like the individual events will be very close as well based on past scoring. Yale and Penn have both been facing injury and illness issues, though the host Bulldogs have had to go without a full lineup the past few weeks. Even if Yale is unable to compete for the team crown the white and blue will clearly be in the individual events.

Temple at Southern Connecticut State University, February 28th, 2009 1pm, Moore Field House, Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, CT
(SCSU Routines List)

It’s Owls versus Owls as Division 1 Temple heads up to Division 2 SCSU to take on the Owls there. Temple has the edge in the high and average score, though the individual competition should be much closer. Though both teams’ scores will figure more into their standing in the different divisions of the ECAC.

George Washington at New Hampshire, February 28th, 2009 1pm, Lundholm Gymnasium, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH
(New Hampshire Routines List)

The New Hampshire Wildcats are coming off a rough and tumble weekend, where they still picked up a pair of solid scores, and fellow EAGL team, George Washington had their highest score of the year. Both teams would like to go to Regionals. New Hampshire currently is among the top 36, though GW is currently 41st and has some work to do to make it into the top 36. Thus this meet is important in that respect as well. The individual competition also looks like it could be very close based on past high scores.

Alaska-Anchorage, Bridgeport at Rutgers, February 28th, 2009 7pm, Livingston Recreation Center, Rutgers University, Piscataway, NJ
(Bridgeport Routines List) (Rutgers Partial Routines List)

This is a rare meet to say the least. The Scarlet Knights of Rutgers and the Purple Knights of Bridgeport met just last week, but now the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves are coming to New Jersey, which is quite a long flight to say the least. The teams could end up scoring very close teamwise, and individually, though Alaska has the highest team score of the three.

SUNY Brockport at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, February 28th, 2009 1pm, DuPont Gymnasium, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA
(MIT Routines List)

The Brockport Golden Eagles will arrive in Cambridge to wrap up the regular season and following a season high 187.6. Scoring like that will make Brockport a factor in the ECAC D3 Championships, though MIT has been hot in the past two championships scoring wise as well. It’s also senior day. Brockport continues to have a deep lineup and MIT is mixing their veterans with the freshmen and sophomores who contribute in different ways each meet. Those looking for all around action should follow MIT’s Julia Zimmerman and Leanna Morinishi and Brockport’s Lauren Gildemeyer and Kaitlin Dewey.
