What if my club coach does not plan to help in the recruiting process
Many parents often ask me if their daughter needs to have their coach involved in the recruiting process to find a college team. The answer is “no” but it sure helps!

I like to look at the recruiting process as a team effort. The gymnast, parent, club coach and possibly myself. Everybody brings something a little different to the table, all of which are very important to enhance this very big decision.

The gymnast has the desire and dream. The parents know their daughter best and contribute the reality of what is needed financially to make it work as well as the support when the college is chosen. The coach is the expert on the gymnast skill level, work ethic and future potential. Hopefully, I can be that person that pulls this all together and provide structure to the process as well as a relaxed focused plan so that everyone else can do their jobs and not “stress” about the unknowns of the recruiting process.

Some club coaches tell the gymnast up front that they do not have the time to be very involved in the recruiting process.  Other club coaches help a tremendous amount.  The good news is the college coaches are use to working with both situations.

For some of the Elite drop back gymnasts or very high Level 10 gymnasts this may not be a problem to not have club coach involved as their gymnastics speaks for itself. College coaches come after these types of recruits so to speak. But, what if you are a late bloomer or have injuries that postponed your best results? It can be very overwhelming to walk through this process on your own.

Below are a few of the items I recommend to get started if you and your parents are alone in the recruiting process:

1. Pick college gymnastics teams that are within your reach of skills and academics
2. Get your information in the the hands of college coaches
3. Be tenacious

Recruiting has become very competitive! Don’t wait till its too late. Have a plan and execute it.
