DETROIT, Mich. -- On Monday (May 4), Dylan Bosch of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team and Sachi Sugiyama of the women's gymnastics team were named the Michigan Male and Female College Athletes of the Year by the Detroit Athletic Club (DAC). The duo will be presented with their awards next Monday (May 11) at the 19th annual DAC Athletic Awards in downtown Detroit.
The University of Michigan has now had a male student-athlete win the award in four consecutive seasons, as Bosch follows Kellen Russell (2012 -- wrestling) and Connor Jaeger (2013-14 -- swimming and diving). He is the fourth male student-athlete from Michigan to win the award since its inception in 2006, joining the aforementioned pair and former swimmer Davis Tarwater (2006). Sugiyama is the third female student-athlete from Michigan to win, following Tiffany Ofili (2008 -- track and field) and Lexi Zimmerman (2011 -- volleyball).
Sugiyama (Keller, Texas) saved her best season for last, helping guide Michigan to Big Ten Regular Season and Championships titles, and a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships during her senior season. She finished the season ranked No. 8 in the all-around (averaged 39.392) and was one of the six national finalists for the 2015 AAI Award, given annually to the nation's top senior women's gymnast. She won Big Ten and NCAA Regional titles on floor exercise and vault, respectively, and was an NCAA All-American (first team: floor exercise). She was also a two-time NACGC/W Regular Season All-America (all-around, floor exercise). Sugiyama is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree (2013-15) and was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2014. She completed her eligibility and will graduate next spring with a degree in art and design.
