#13 Penn State takes on Big 10 Opponent #39 Maryland at Home
This weekend brings an intriguing Big 10 matchup to Penn State’s Recreation Hall between #13 ranked Penn State and #39 ranked Maryland. Both teams are coming off great Big 10 performances from last weekend with Penn State having competed with Nebraska and Maryland competing against Minnesota.

Penn State is coming off of a fantastic road score of 196.025 last weekend against Nebraska. The Nittany Lions are led by senior All-Arounders Krystal Welsh and Sidney Sanabria-Robles in addition to several amazing freshman. In the first rotation Penn State began on the Uneven Bars. While slightly missed handstands kept the scores relatively flat, there were flashes of brilliance with high flying releases and stuck landings. In the second rotation on vault, freshman Briannah Tsang scored a 9.95 with an outstanding Yurchenko 1.5 vault, one of the hardest vaults being competed in NCAA gymnastics. Floor was highlighted by huge tumbling from many of the gymnasts including an “E” pass, the hardest level of skill, from 5 out of the 6 competing gymnasts. Sophomore Emma Sibson scored a career high 9.9 on the event.

Maryland is competing with Penn State for the first time in the Big 10 Conference. Maryland’s performance over the weekend was highlighted by senior Karen Tang’s 9.925 Uneven Bar routine which was both a school and personal record. While beam issues plagued the team early in the rotation, they were able to rebound with a fantastic 9.85 routine from senior Stephanie Giameo. The Terps meet concluded with an outstanding floor rotation led by seniors Katy Dodds and Ebony Walters both scoring 9.875's. Dodds competed in her second meet after a season ending Achilles injury last year.

From both teams, expect high flying gymnastics and big skills. It will come down to the final rotation with Penn State on Floor and Maryland on Balance Beam. The competition will begin at 4:00 pm in Penn State’s Recreation Hall. It is also a double dual with the #6 Penn State men’s team competing against #2 Michigan.

Stay tuned for videos of routines after the meet in addition to interviews with several of the gymnasts.
