Great Britain Fights Through Subdivision 5, Falls Second To China

Great Britain had an impressive performance at the Subdivision Five Qualifications, where they came in second behind China. The team showcased consistent and skillful routines on each event, and proved they are strong contenders for a team medal.

Pommel Horse

Great Britan begins their qualification competition on the Pommel Horse, lead by Courtney Tulloch. He performed a beautiful first routine with great scissor and single pommel work, giving his team a solid start with 13.833. Next up, Nile Wilson displays great hip extension and amplitude above the pommel on each of his skills, showing off long lines and a stuck dismount to continue Great Britain’s momentum with a 14.266.

In the third position, Dan Purvis executed another clean set for his country with no major errors. Dan Keatings looked spectacular with high difficulty skills and clever composition, yet while he managed to stay on the equipment, he had one leg separation half way through the routine. A 15.333 will temporally place him fifth on the event.

In Great Britain’s anchor position was Max Whitlock, who is known for being top notch on this event. Whitlock showcased a fluid rhythm and text-book hip extension above the pommel, however, a slight leg separation and imprecise execution will cost him tenths from his score. He ended up with a 15.233, ranked in sixth place for the time being.

The British team finished the pommel with the highest event total after the first event- 59.473.

Still Rings

Keatings began the rings with an incredibly solid performance, nailing the 1.5 twisting double tuck dismount. Puts up a 13.933. Whitlock, in the second position on the event, showcased flawless execution and immense strength. High level of difficulty and a respectable double twisting double tuck dismount to finish the set and earn a 14.533.

Continuing down the lineup, Wilson continued the streak of clean routines, putting up a 14.766. Purvis kept the momentum going, performing the fourth consistent routine from Great Britain, earning a 14.433. Tulloch anchors the rings with a HUGE stuck landing! 15.7 to finish off an incredible rings rotation, putting him in third place on the event, for now.

This Great Britain team looks focused and prepared to take on the competition at this World Championships. The team had been consistent on two events, hoping to carry the momentum to the next four.

Vault

Keatings kicked off vault with a huge Tsuk double twist, nearly sticks the landing. Earned a 14.40 in the lead off position. Wilson upgraded from Keatings’ vault and nailed a Tsuk 2.5 twist, with a small hop on the landing to score him with a 14.90.

Purvis NAILED his Yurchenko 2.5 twist and the team goes crazy! Put up a solid 14.966.
Whitlock hit a triple twisting Yurchenko, but lands it on the boundary lines and hops to one side. Huge amplitude! Scored a 15.20.

Kristian Thomas
with the most unique vault I’ve seen in qualifications, Yurchenko double pike. Great height and execution, but takes multiple steps on the landing. Scored a 15.20.
For his second vault, nailed a massive front handspring double front, with a step on the landing. Incredible power from Thomas who averaged a 15.033 for both vaults.

At the half way point in the competition, Great Britain had no major errors and seemed pleased with their standings.

Parallel Bars

Tulloch up first for Great Britain. Great height on his front and backward double tucks between the bars, ending the set with a stuck double piked dismount. Solid routine that earned a 14.00. Whitlock in the second position, showing off elegant lines and great amplitude releasing from the bar. Another stuck double piked dismount! 14.866.

Purvis up third. Performed a clean, executed set with a third stuck double piked dismount! The momentum is incredible! Earned a huge 15.133. Wilson with the first break in a parallel bar routine. Nearly lost control of a handstand, but managed to pull it back and complete the rest of the set virtually mistake-free. Small hop on the double piked dismount. 14.525.

Anchoring Great Britain on parallel bars is Keatings. Overall, solid routine with a single break on one of his handstands, nothing major. Difficult dismount, double front, with a small step on the blind landing. 14.633.

High Bar

Purvis with the lead off position on high bar. Huge amplitude on release moves, with a stuck double double layout dismount! Great start to the event, scored a 14.1. Keatings with incredible height on his releases, really shows off a powerful swing throughout the routine. Full twisting double layout dismount to end a solid routine, scored a Whitlock is an all-around incredible high bar swinger. His execution is flawless, paired with great height and a nice level of difficulty. Swung with ease and scored a 14.600 on a beautiful routine.

Wilson continuing the momentum with another clean and consistent routine. Scored a 14.900 and Great Britain is on fire! Thomas anchored the event with a skillful routine and a high level of difficulty. His long lines demand attention and his flawless execution show why the high bar is his specialty. Earned a 14.80 on a solid routine to conclude the event.

Floor

Keatings opens floor with a stuck double twisting double tuck. Very stylized on this event and known for his elegance on floor. Huge double arabian to another stuck landing. Very solid first routine for Great Britain, scored a 15.00.

Wilson opens his floor exercise with a huge double twisting double tuck. Double arabian side pass, stuck cold! Showcases great control with his powerful tumbling. Put up a 14.966. Thomas opened with a whip to piked double arabian, stuck landing. Incredible power in each pass. 15.00 exactly. Purdis in the fourth position on floor. Huge double double tuck with only a small hop on the landing. Incredibly clean gymnasts who executed each pass to perfection and demonstrates great control of his power. Solid set, scored 15.433.

Whitlock suffered a fall on the first pass of his routine. He managed to re-focus and finished a strong routine with the single mistake. Obvious disappointment shown after concluding the set. Scored 13.766.
