The junior men took to the podium today for day one of the 2014 P&G Championships. The field of 40 showed some big skills and tremendous promise for the future of Team USA. 

 

Cole Casanova, brother of gymnast Briley Casanova, was up first on floor.  He completed a clean double Arabian and showcased a large number of twisting skills for a 14.2. Fabian DeLuna followed on vault with a hit Kaz 2.5 twist, scoring 13.95. Marty Strech, 2013 national floor champion, performed a solid floor routine for a 14.5. He started with a double twisting double back and showed clean execution and high tumbling throughout. 

 

New Oklahoma Sooner and 2013 junior national champion in the 15-16-year-old division, Hunter Justus, started on parallel bars. Justus showed nice lines and a clean routine, scoring 13.85.  Reigning national champion in the 17-18 division, Dmitri Belanovksi, had a difficult start on high bar. He fell on his Kovacs and his hand slipped off on his laid-out Tkatchev.  He recovered nicely, however, finishing with a clean full twisting double layout with a small hop.  He scored 12.05.     

 

At the end of the first rotation, Kyle King led the 17-18 division, followed by Jacob Barrus, Kiwan Watts, Justus, and Ryan Sheppard.  Strech led the 15-16 division, followed by Casanova, Christian Kalustian, DeLuna, and Tristan Burke.  

 

Strech took to the pommel horse, hitting his routine despite a couple of small stumbles for a 13.3. Jessen next showed a strong vault for a 14.55. Justus moved to high bar and performed a Kolman, Kovacs, and double twisting double layout dismount, to cheers from his teammates. DeLuna fell on his parallel bars dismount, scoring 12.5. Belanovski took to the floor where he opened with a high piked double Arabian with a hop and continued with nice twisting elements. Unfortunately, his knees buckled on the landing for his final pass, a tuck double Arabian and his knee appeared to have touched the floor. He scored 13.35.  National team member, Yul Moldaeur, was on bars next where he performed a strong Kolman, hop full, and Rybalko, but fell on his Kovacs. He finished with a gorgeous, stuck full twisting double layout, for 12.9. 

 

At the end of the second rotation, Watts took over the lead in the 17-18 division.  Barrus was in second, followed by Sheppard. In the 15-16 division, was McCallum followed by David Jessen and Strech, who were tied for second.

 

In the third rotation, Strech took to the rings, where he performed a clean double front between the rings and stuck his dismount, for 14.4. Jessen performed a solid routine on p-bars but stepped forward and put his hands down on his double pike dismount. Justus moved to floor, where he showed powerful tumbling and good landings, dismounting with a slightly low full in for a 14.45.  DeLuna hit his high bar routine, dismounting with a double twisting double layout and scoring 13.75. Moldauer was next on floor, where he showcased his trademark execution for a powerful, quick routine that featured great form and tight tumbling, with just a few hops on landings. He scored 14.15. 

 

After three rotations, Baker led the 17-18 division followed by Watts and Justus. Strech retained his lead in the 15-16 division, followed by Anderson and Burke. 

 

Justus started his fourth rotation on pommel horse, showing clean lines and good rhythm, for a 13.15.  Watts performed on high bar, scoring 13.45. Belanovski was next on rings where he had some execution errors, but finished with a stuck dismount, scoring 13.95. Strech under-rotated his vault and sat down, scoring 13.7. Wenske was next on pommel horse, hitting his routine with quick circling elements despite some form breaks. David Jessen rounded out the high bar lineup in rotation four, starting with a beautiful Kolman and a nice, though closely caught, Kovacs. He dismounted with a gorgeous, stuck full twisting double tuck, scoring 13.2. 

 

At the end of the fourth rotation, Baker continued to lead the 17-18 division, followed by Watts and King. Strech also continued to lead the 15-16 division, followed by Burke and McCallum.   

 

Baker, started rotation five on high bar.  He showed a clean routine that included a nice one-arm giant, Weiler kip, and an exciting triple back dismount with just a small hop for a 13.95. Peter Daggett moved to floor where he scored 14.1. Anthony MCallum did a beautiful Tsuk double pike vault, but unfortunately over rotated and fell on his landing. Yaraslav Pochinka followed with another exciting vault, a handspring double front for a 14.7. Next on vault, Ryan Sheppard scored a 14.75 for a beautiful vault that earned a huge 9.55 execution score.  Strech hit his parallel bars routine, scoring 13.8. Justus performed on rings for his fifth rotation. He showed tremendous strength, clean handstands, and nice flipping elements, finishing with a slightly piked down full twisting double layout. Watts was on floor, where he showed nice twisting and execution, scoring 14.15.

 

Heading into the sixth and final rotation, Baker continued to lead the 17-18 field, followed by Watts, Justus, Sheppard, and Moldauer.  Strech held on to his lead in the 15-16 division, followed by McCallum, Burke, Daggett, and Breckenridge.  

 

Belanovski completed his competition on parallel bars, where he swung well, dismounting with a stuck double pike and scoring 13.55. Moldauer ended his day on vault, executing a double twisting Yurchenko. He landed a bit low and took a large step to the side, scoring 14.2. McCallum finished his day with a hit parallel bars routine, scoring 14.55.  Strech finished on high bar, executing a great routine that featured a high Tkachev, Tkachev to mixed grip, two Endos and and a nearly stuck double twisting double layout dismount. He scored 14.3.  Justus saved the best for last on his final event, vault.  He completed a huge double front with just a small hop forward.  He let out a loud, celebratory roar upon landing, for the highest score of the session - 15.0. Sheppard hit his parallel bars routine, scoring a 14.25.  Watts and Daggett both finished their competition on pommel horse, scoring 13.35 and 12.2, respectively. Baker completed his excellent day with a nice floor routine that included a double front, double Arabian, and a triple full dismount.  He scored 14.25, solidifying his lead heading into day two. 

 

The men will compete all-around again on Sunday, the final day.
