Queenslanders Naoya Tsukahara and Georgia Godwin have won the senior all-around crowns in men's and women's divisions at the Australian Gymnastics Championships at Hisense Arena in Melbourne.

Tsukahara claimed an incredible fifth title in six years with an all-around score of 172.881 to finish ahead of New Zealand’s Mikhail Koudinov (166.297) and Queensland teammate Michael Mercieca (166.112)

Competing at the national championships at senior level for just the second time, 16-year-old Godwin claimed the title with a score of 108.425 after finishing third in 2013.

Godwin, who has only been back in full training for three weeks due to injury, was incredibly consistent across the two nights of competition, finishing with an all-around score of 54.200 in the preliminary round and 54.225 in the final.

“This competition was the first time that I have successfully completed all of my routines twice in a row, so I was pretty happy with that,” Godwin said. “I have been dealing with injuries and came up a bit sore this morning, so coming into tonight I just wanted to try my hardest and do my best. It is great that I was able to stick all my routines and winning was the icing on the cake.”

In the final Godwin scored 13.0 on vault, 13.65 on bars and 12.875 on floor.
Her highest score of 14.7 on beam was second only to international star Lauren Mitchell.

Last year’s champion, Madelaine Leydin of Victoria, was second in the all-around competition with a combined total of 105.225, while her teammate Kiara Munteanu came third with 104.725.

Mitchell also had a good evening, registering the top score on floor (13.9) as well as beam (15.5), while Victorian Larrissa Miller put in another outstanding performance on bars with a top score of 15.475. Isis Lowery’s score of 14.325 was the highest on vault in the final session.

Victorian Georgia-Rose Brown, who was leading the all-around event after the preliminary session, was forced to withdraw after injuring her ankle while warming up for her floor routine.

In the men’s competiton, Tsukahara managed to lift his standard even higher in the final session, increasing his scores from the preliminary round on every apparatus.

The three-time Olympian had the top scores on pommel horse (14.45), rings (15.133) and parallel bars (15.133).

Mercieca was consistent on all apparatus and held the top score on vault (14.533) and high bar (14.666). Victoria’s Luke Wadsworth was the best performer on floor in the final with a score of 14.933.

Victorian Luke Wiwatowski, who was in second place after the preliminary round, only managed to complete three apparatus after injuring his foot on his vault landing.
