The 2014 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Conference Championships are being held in Norman, Oklahoma on Saturday, March 29 at 4 p.m. CT.
The No.1 ranked Sooners are looking to to win their third consecutive conference title and 21st conference championship overall. Oklahoma has won 12 of the last 15 MPSF titles since 1999.
This competition is usually held at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, but due to construction and renovations, is being moved to the University of Oklahoma McCasland Fieldhouse this year.
"It's definitely an amazing feeling to have conference here at OU," says Sooner senior Raymond White, "We know we are prepared for this and being at home helps us to solidify that feeling."
The Sooners are ranked No.1 on four of the six events heading into post season, including floor exercise (75.983), pommel horse (73.933), still rings (74.833) and vault (74.500). They are ranked No. 3 on the parallel bars and No. 4 on high bar.
Defending national champion, Michael Squires, is currently ranked No. 1 on the still rings with a 15.983 average. OU also has four gymnasts ranked nationally on pommel horse, the most out of any team in the country, and five individuals ranked on the floor exercise. Michael Reid leads the way on pommel horse coming in at No. 3, and floor is led by Alec Robin coming in at No. 2.
"It's going to be an exciting meet that comes down to the last event," says junior Alec Robin, "It's going to depend on which team is the most mentally tough."
Oklahoma won five of six individual event MPSF titles in 2013. Sergey Resnick on pommel horse (14.500), Michael Squires on rings (15.650), Alec Robin on vault (15.500), Presten Ellsworth on parallel bars (14.800), and William Clement (14.950) championships. Oklahoma has now won 116 individual conference crowns.
Since Mark Williams was named OU head coach in 2000, the Sooners have won 11 conference titles, all as members of the MPSF.
