DULUTH, Ga. - Boise State redshirt senior Amy Glass was named the 2012 AAI Award winner Thursday evening (April 19) at the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship awards banquet held at the Gwinnett Center. 

 

Glass becomes the first Bronco to ever earn the honor, considered the sport's equivalent to the Heisman Award. The honor is given annually to the top senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I women's gymnastics by a vote of the sports' head coaches from around the country. 

 

 "It was a pleasant surprise," exclaimed Glass. "I am thrilled to know that the NCAA coaches think so highly of me."

 

The Vacaville, Calif., native was one of six finalists for the award, all who were recognized at the banquet. She won the award ahead of a talented field of gymnasts, including Kat Ding of Georgia, Megan Ferguson of Oklahoma, Leslie Mak of Oregon State, Jaime Pisani of Arkansas and Geralen Stack-Eaton of Alabama. 

 

"We are so proud of Amy and her accomplishments," said co-head coach Tina Bird. "She is truly inspirational and we couldn't be happier for her." 

 

A 2011 Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Year and 2010 NCAA West Region Gymnast of the Year, Glass is ready to compete in her final gymnastics meet this weekend. She will compete in the NCAA National Championship all-around during Friday's second semifinal at 4 p.m. (MT). A student-athlete who has already re-written the record books, Glass has a chance to become the first Bronco to advance to the NCAA Individual Event Finals slated for Sunday (April 22) at 11 a.m. (MT).
