2012 Olympic Gymnastics Qualifiers


LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, October 27, 2011: Following the Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics qualifying world championships held in Tokyo (JPN) this month, the FIG officially confirmed the list of the first qualifiers for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
 
For the men’s and women’s team competitions, the eight first places have been allocated to the federations. In January 2012, the Olympic test event and FIG second qualifying competition will qualify four remaining teams each.
 
For the individual gymnasts, Tokyo designated places to female and male apparatus medal winners. The London test event will furthermore determine a number of individual places as needed.
 
Places will finally be allocated according to continental criteria, the host country and by the Tripartite Commission (NOCs, IOC, FIG) up to a total of 98 MAG and 98 WAG gymnasts.
 
The Olympic test event for Artistic Gymnastics will take place in the North Greenwich Arena of London, on January 10 - 13, 2012.

Below is the list of the countries automatically qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games:

MEN's TEAMS: China, Japan, USA, Russia, Ukraine, Korea, Germany, Romania 

WOMEN's TEAMS: USA, Russia, China, Romania, Japan, Australia, Germany, Great Britain


A handful of inidividual gymnasts also qualifed by winning individual event medals at the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo. The below gymnasts are qualified to the 2012 Olympic Games as individuals:

MEN: Diego Hypolito (Brazil)*, Alexander Shatilov (ISR), Krisztian Berki (HUN), Cyril Tommasone (FRA)*, Arthur Nabarrete Zanetti (BRA)*, Vasileios Tsolakisis (GRE)
* qualified to the Olympic Games as inidividuals only if Brazil and France fail to qualify a full team at the Test Event

WOMEN: Thi Ha Thanh Phan (VIE)


Here is the list of countries qualifed to compete at the Olympic Test Event. The countries who place top four at this event will advance a full team to the 2012 Olympics

MEN's TEAMS: France, Great Britain, Spain, Canada, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Italy, Belarus

WOMEN's TEAMS: Italy, France, Canada, Spain, Netherlands, Brazil, Korea, Belgium



There are additional wildcard places yet to be named. Also, should the British men not qualify a full team they will select one gymnast to represent them as the host country nominative place. 

In the end there will be a total of 60 gymnasts representing teams (5 members of 12 teams), and 36 individual gymnasts for both men and women.
