Team USA Women's Alternate Named

Martha Kayolyi and Kathy Kelly just announced the USA women's alternate for 2010 Worlds. It has been decided that Chelsea Davis of Texas Dreams will be the reserve gymnast for the US team.

Chelsea has been looking amazing here in Rotterdam, but she suffered an injury in today's training that turned out to be a dislocated kneecap. Each girl did a full floor routine. Chelsea's tumbling looked great all day, but in the first pass of her routine (front layout to front double full) she landed the pass upright but fell to the ground following the landing. Valeri carried her out of the training gym to the medical staff. Fortunately she was able to walk out of the arena on her own. This likely weighed into the decision to bench her, but knowing Chelsea she could tough it out and compete. Too bad.

Here's the official word from USA Gymnastics on Chelsea's injury:
"According to the team doctor, Dr. Larry Nassar, Davis dislocated her knee cap when she landed a tumbling pass with a bent knee. Her condition is being monitored and treated by Dr. Nassar and the medical staff.

And the official word from USA Gymnastics on the USA team lineup:
"The six women are: Rebecca Bross of Plano, Texas/WOGA; Mackenzie Caquatto of Naperville, Ill./Legacy Elite Gymnastics; Mattie Larson of Los Angeles/All Olympia; Alexandra Raisman of Needham, Mass./Brestyan's American Gymnastics; Alicia Sacramone of Winchester, Mass./Brestyan’s; and Bridget Sloan of Pittsboro, Ind./Sharp’s Gymnastics.

The women’s line-up for the qualification round is:
Vault – Bross, Larson, Caquatto, Raisman and Sacramone;
Uneven bars – Raisman, Larson, Sloan, Caquatto and Bross
Balance beam – Caquatto, Larson, Raisman, Sacramone and Bross
Floor exercise – Caquatto, Sloan, Bross, Raisman and Larson.
Four of the women will compete on all four events: Bross, Caquatto, Larson and Raisman."

Wow, so no chance of Bridget Sloan defending her all around title. Rebecca Bross has been looking decent in training on all 4 events and doesn't appear bothered by her shin injury.

The U.S. women do not begin competition at the World Championships until Sunday, Oct. 17, at 9 a.m. Rotterdam time. Keep in mind that federations are now allowed to change the alternate following the qualification competition, so there is still a possibility that all 7 gymnasts will get the chance to compete. I'll keep you updated. What you do you think of these lineups, and our chances of having an all around medalist this time around?
