The 2024 Wanda Diamond League season is rolling along, and the third stop on the circuit will bring many of the world’s elite track and field athletes to Doha, Qatar.

The season kicked off at the end of April with a pair of stops in China — Xiamen and Shanghai/Suzhou.

The 15-event Diamond League schedule this year will see the athletes cross the globe, with the season-ending championship event taking place in Brussels, Belgium, on Sept. 13-14. There will be a short break in the schedule for the 2024 Summer Olympics in early August.

The day in Doha will include eight men’s disciplines and seven women’s disciplines, as athletes continue to collect points toward the year’s final event in Belgium.

The invitation-only Diamond League brings together the most elite track & field athletes to showcase their skills, earn prize money, collect points toward the season-ending championship event and ultimately elevate the status of athletics across the globe.

Traditionally, Diamond League competition includes a slate of 16 disciplines, though not every meet features all of them.

Points accumulated during the first 14 events of the season determine the athletes who advance to the final event, where they compete for more prize money and Diamond League titles.

The competition, being held at the Qatar Sports Club, is expected to include a variety of Olympic and world medalists. Among them, reigning Olympic, world and Asian Games javelin champion Neeraj Chopra of India; Olympic, world and European long jump champion Miltiádis Tentóglou of Greece; women’s 800-meter world champion Mary Moraa of Kenya and many more.

One big question is whether the action can match the excitement of the 2023 event, which was the season-opening competition and featured seven world-leading performances, three meet records and four national records – all in front of a sellout crowd.

The host venue – the Qatar Sports Club (Suheim bin Hamad) Stadium – is located just a few kilometers from the city center. The open-air facility is one of the largest sports facilities in Qatar and is the home of the local soccer team, Qatar SC, which plays in the Qatar Stars League.

The stadium, which also is known as Qatar SC Stadium, opened in 1985 and can fit 12,000 spectators. It’s primarily used for soccer, but it’s very versatile and has been a longtime host for top-tier track and field events – including the inaugural Diamond League event in 2010.
