William & Mary Baseball Schedule 2024: What To Know

The William & Mary Tribe look to surprise in the Coastal Athletic Association during the 2024 baseball season.

The top of the Coastal Athletic Association is crowded with such teams as Northeastern, UNC Wilmington, Charleston and newcomer Campbell. William & Mary looks to add to the crowd in 2024.

The Tribe begin the new season with one of the strongest starting pitching staffs in the CAA, and some returning cornerstones in the batting order to help integrate new contributors in the pursuit of a conference championship.

William & Mary is seeking its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2016. Here's how the Tribe stack up as they compete for a CAA championship.

How Did William & Mary Baseball Do In 2023?

William & Mary baseball finished the 2023 season at 32-25 overall. The Tribe's wins included a 3-2 defeat of then-No. 15-ranked Campbell, a former non-conference opponent that joins William & Mary in the CAA in 2024.

In last year's CAA, the Tribe finished exactly .500 at 15-15, and were bounced from the CAA Championship with losses to Northeastern and Charleston.

Who Coaches William & Mary Baseball?

Mike McRae became the William & Mary baseball coach in 2022. McRae returned to head coaching after a stint as an assistant at VCU, one of William & Mary's non-conference foes in 2024.

McRae previously spent 13 seasons at Canisius, where he led the Golden Griffins to at least a share of three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2013 and 2015.

The Tribe went 26-23 in McRae's first season with a fourth-place finish in the CAA, and 32-25 last season with a sixth-place finish in the Coastal.

Has William & Mary Baseball Ever Won The College World Series?

No, William & Mary baseball has never won the College World Series.

The Tribe have advanced to four NCAA Tournaments, all in the last 40 years. Their first postseason trip came in 1983, when they appeared in a regional that also featured future conference mates Delaware and James Madison.

William & Mary did not return to the NCAA Tournament until 2001, and didn't score its first postseason wins until 2013, when the Tribe eliminated Ole Miss from the Raleigh Regional. In 2016, the program's last trip to the postseason, William & Mary scored wins over Bryant and national powerhouse Virginia, the latter sending the Tribe into an elimination game against East Carolina for a shot at the Super Regional.

Notable Returning Players

Nate Knowles, RHP

The ace of the William & Mary pitching staff, Nate Knowles, is a preseason All-CAA selection. Knowles debuted with the Tribe in 2022 as a reliever, working 26 1/3 innings in which he struck out 22.

Knowles moved into the starting rotation last season and finished the 2023 campaign with a 3.43 ERA, 70 strikeouts and gave up only four home runs over 65 2/3 innings.

A brief stint with Vermont of the Northeast Collegiate Baseball League over the summer sends Knowles into his 2024 campaign.

Joe Delossantos, OF

Outfielder Joe Delossantos is the top returning hitter in the William & Mary lineup after batting .271 in 2023 with eight home runs. His numbers were down slightly from 2022, when Delossantos hit .313 with a .954 OPS, nine home runs and 38 RBI.

Delossantos spent summer ball with the Strasburg Express of the Valley League and hit .318 with a .429 on-base percentage and eight home runs over just 110 at-bats. Building on his summer, Delossantos could be primed for a star turn in 2024.

Notable Newcomers

Alex Markus, RHP

Roanoke transfer Alex Markus adds depth to the William & Mary bullpen after improved production in each of his four seasons with the NCAA Div. III program.

Markus struck out 18 batters in 14 2/3 innings of work out of the bullpen last season.

In the Coastal Plain League over the summer, Markus struck out 14 in 10 1/3 innings.

Luca Trigiani, INF

Middle infielder Luca Trigiani transferred to William & Mary from St. Joseph's where, in 2023, he was an All-Atlantic 10 Conference selection.

Trigiani hit .307 last season with an OPS of .957 and a slugging percentage of .579. He homered seven times in 114 at-bats and successfully stole base on all eight of his attempts.

Trigiani's numbers improved each year he was at St. Joseph's, beginning with a .256 batting average in 2021 and jumping to .299 in 2022 before last year's breakout showing.
