Oregon State vs. New Mexico Baseball Recap: Beavers Slam 7 Homers In Win

Oregon State Baseball showed why it's in the top 10 of the 2024 college baseball polls but might have made argument for why the Beavers need to be in the top-5 in the Sanderson Ford Baseball Classic on Feb. 16.

OSU beat New Mexico 15-6 in Surprise, Arizona in the first day of the four-day showcase. 

The Beavers had six home runs before the seventh inning and 14 runs overall as Tyce Peterson hit a pair of home runs, top prospect Travis Bazzana had another and star freshman Trent Caraway also went yard, hit a double and stole a base.

The added another home run by Jacob Krieg to make it seven home runs and 15 overall runs.

It was some Opening Day for the Beavers, ranked has high as No. 5 in one poll but a consensus top-10 team overall. 

While Oregon State finished 17 hits, it was the pitching that also turned heads for the Beavers. Starter Aidan May went 5.1 innings and allowed just four hits one run. A.J. Lattery pitch 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Tyler Mejia allowed five runs with 15-1 lead, before Noah Ferguson pitched a clean 1.1 inning. 

Oregon State plays Minnesota at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the second day of the Baseball Classic.

Noah Ferguson pitched a scoreless ninth to finish the game. 

Bottom Of Eighth: New Mexico Works Around Hit. Enters 9th Down 15-6

New Mexico has one more shot to bat trailing by nine runs. 

Top Of Eighth: New Mexico Clobbers Oregon State Reliever; New Mexico Homers.OSU Up 15-6

Pitcher Tyler Mejia, a lefty,  relieved A.J. Lattery. Mejia allowed a home run to Jake Holland. 

Another error by Oregon State, it's second of the inning, led to a second run in the inning. 

With the bases loaded, New Mexico shortstop Chase Weissenborn hit a three-run double to end Mejia's day. 

Noah Ferguson took over on the mound with two outs. 

Bottom Of Seventh: Guess What? Oregon State Hit Another Home Run

Jacob Krieg hit a pinch hit home run, it was the seventh home run of the day for OSU. They lead 15-1.

Top Of Seventh: Oregon State Baseball Gets Out of Jam After New Mexico Puts Two On

A.J. Lattery pitched around a hit and a walk to get out of the inning without allowing any runs. OSU leads 14-1.

Bottom Of Sixth: Tyce Peterson Of Oregon State Gets Another Hit, Tanner Smith Slams Another HR

Tyce Peterson, who already has two home runs, added a single in the sixth inning. The Beavers then added a three-run home run by Tanner Smith. It's no 14-1. 

It was the sixth home run of the day for Oregon State.

Aidan May's day is over after pitching 5.1 innings with four strikeouts. He is in line for his first win of the season with the Beavers leading 11-1.

May 5-3 record with a 6.33 ERA in 16 starts for Arizona last season.

A.J. Lattery ended the inning for Oregon State after allowing a hit and registering a strikeout.

Aidan May is has now allowed four hits, walked one and struck out three in the game. He was helped by a strong play by Travis Bazzana for the final out.

Bottom Of Fourth: Oregon State Baseball Leaving Nothing In Doubt After 7-run inning

Starting the inning with back-to-back home runs, Oregon State used a bases-clearing double to scored three runs from Gavin Turley and followed it with a second home run from Tyce Peterson. OSU leads 11-1. 

Oregon State hit three home runs in the inning and have five home runs altogether.

One of the best freshman in the country is showing why. In his first two at-bats, Trent Caraway is 2-for-1 with a home run and a double.

Caraway was the California Gatorade Player of the Year last season at JSerra Catholic. He hit .462 last season.

Elijah Hainline used a sacrifice bunt to drive Josh McDowell in for a run as Oregon State added another run. Jaren Jackson started the inning by allowing a single and double.

Aiden May worked out of a jam again after an infield single and a walk. 

Bottom Of Second: Travis Bazzana Drive In Run, Beavers Score 2, OSU 3, NM 1

The Beavers flexed its muscles on starter Jaren Jackson, who allowed four hits and two runs in the second inning. Tyce Peterson hit a home run and Travis Bazzana hit a single for his first hit of the season as OSU took a 3-1 lead.

The Lobos notched a run off May in the second inning when Josh McAlister singled to left to drive in Jake Holland.

Center fielder Micah McDowell hit the first home run of the Sanderson Ford Baseball Classic when he slammed home a pitch from Jaren Jackson to give OSU the lead. 

Top prospect Travis Bazzana nearly hit a leadoff home run after taking a pitch to the warning track. 

Jackson finished the inning allowing one hit with one strikeout.

First pitch is here. Oregon State Baseball is 17-5 all-time against the Lobos and 6-1 since 2018. The two programs have opened the season against each other for three straight seasons.

The Lobos are starting senior Jaren Jackson, who was 3-2 with a 7.46 ERA in 2023 in 12 appearances in 2023. He started eight games for Oregon State for New Mexico last season.

The Beavers are starting Aiden May in the opener. The junior from Albuquerque, New Mexico begins his first season with the Beavers after pitching for Arizona a year ago, He had a 5-3 record with a 6.33 ERA in 16 starts. He led the Wildcats with 77 strikeouts in 75 1/3 innings in 2023.

Ironically, his best game of 2023 was against his new team when he struck out nine Beavers on April 30, 2023.   

No. 3 MLB Draft Prospect Travis Bazzana Batting Leadoff For OSU

Travis Bazzana, who opens the season on the Golden Spikes Award watch list and the consensus No.3 prospect in the MLB Draft Class, will bat first against New Mexico. 

Bazzana stole a school-record 36 bases last season and has 50 for his career.

Adley Rutschman, arguably Major League Baseball's best catcher, was the No.1 pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. Bazzana is trying to join him as the only Beavers taken No.1 Nick Madrigal was the No. 4 overall pick in 2018.
