Recruiting Breakdown: Impressive Group Of 6 Make Up Auburn's Incoming Class
Here's a breakdown of the new additions Auburn has made for next year.
In this series, we're getting to know the incoming freshman class for each team. Here's a breakdown of the new additions Auburn has made for 2018.
Auburn took a bit of a step back in the 2017 season. Fresh off back-to-back years in which they landed at the NCAA championships, the Tigers perhaps knew the 2017 season was going to be a rebuilding year. Auburn was a relatively young team and had lost two top seniors coming into 2017. They struggled in the early parts of the season with landings, particularly on floor and vault. But the incoming class looks to be a solid one, and with a young team getting a year of experience the Tigers could be back on the road to the NCAA championships next season.
Outgoing: Kullen Hlawek, Kelsey Kopec, MJ Rott, Lucia Scaglione
Auburn loses six routines from their four seniors -- two each from Rott (vault and floor exercise) and Hlawek (beam and floor) and one each from Kopec (bars) and Scaglione (floor). The floor lineup takes the biggest hit, losing half of its routines. Rott was capable of bringing in solid scores on both of her events, usually in the 9.800-range with some floor scores rising into the 9.9s. Hlawek and Kopec were consistent on their respective events. Scaglione posted a 9.800 or better on floor exercise 11 times during the 2017 season.
Incoming: Sydney Bassett, Jada Glenn, Allie Riddle, Ashley Smith, Meredith Sylvia, Drew Watson
Trains at Prattville YMCA
Bassett is a three-time Region 8 qualifier and she most recently finished 13th on both vault and balance beam at the 2017 Region 8 championships. She was the Alabama state champion in the all-around and on both vault and beam and took silver on uneven bars and finished fifth on floor. She tied for seventh in the all-around at the 2016 Region 8 championships, where she also took 10th on vault, 11th on bars, and 12th on beam. She was the 2016 Alabama state champion on vault, earned bronze on uneven bars, and finished sixth on floor and seventh on beam. Bassett earned silver on vault and bronze in the all-around at the 2015 Alabama state championships where she also finished fourth on both balance beam and uneven bars and fifth on floor.

Trains at Adrenaline Academy
Coached by Aaron Gallegos, Christi Damm, Lisa Grenier, Jackie Steeples
Glenn is a two-time J.O. nationals and J.O. NIT qualifier. She finished eighth on vault at J.O. nationals in 2017. She has earned titles on vault at regionals in 2017 and at Colorado state championships in 2015 and 2016. She was the 2015 Colorado state champion on uneven bars where she also picked up silver on balance beam and floor exercise and in the all-around. She was the 2015 J.O. NIT champion on floor exercise and picked up silver on vault. She finished fourth on beam and fifth in the all-around as well.

Trains at Gulf Coast Gymnastics
Riddle finished ninth on beam and tied for 13th on floor at the 2017 Region 8 championships. She was the Alabama state champion on floor exercise in 2017, took silver on both balance beam and vault, bronze in the all-around, and finished fifth on bars. She won silver on beam and finished fifth on vault at the 2015 Alabama state championships.

Smith is a seven-time qualifier to the J.O. national championships. She finished sixth and eighth on balance beam in 2017 and 2016 respectively. Her best result came in 2014 when she finished fifth in the all-around and was the J.O. national champion on uneven bars. She earned silver in the all-around and was the Region 8 champion on uneven bars in 2017, where she finished fifth on both balance beam and floor exercise and ninth on vault. She was the all-around champion at the North Carolina state championships several weeks earlier. At states, she took silver on both bars and floor, bronze on balance beam, and finished sixth on vault. Smith earned regional titles on bars (2014, 2017), balance beam (2016), vault (2014), and in the all-around (2014). She was a three-time state champion in the all-around (North Carolina in 2016 and 2017, Georgia in 2011) and earned state titles on bars (Georgia 2013, North Carolina 2014 and 2016), floor (2015, 2016), vault (2011), and balance beam (2011).

Sylvia is a four-time Region 7 qualifier and a two-time J.O. national championship qualifier. She was the Region 7 champion on uneven bars and earned the silver medal on balance beam at the 2016 championships. She was the Region 7 all-around champion in back-to-back seasons in 2014 and 2015. She is a three-time Region 7 balance beam champion (2011, 2014, 2015) and a two-time Region 7 champion on floor exercise (2014, 2015). She was the Region 7 vault champion in 2014.
Sylvia was the 2011 Pennsylvania state champion in all-around and also earned state titles on vault (2011, 2014), bars (2011, 2014), beam (2015), and floor (2011). She qualified as a junior elite following the 2011 Level 10 season and competed at the 2011 American Classic where she finished fourth in the all-around, earned silver on both beam and floor, and bronze on bars. She competed at the 2012 Nastia Liukin SuperGirl Cup where she tied for third on bars and finished eighth on floor. At the 2012 American Classic, she won the all-around in the Junior 1 division where she picked up gold on floor, tied for fourth on bars, and finished fifth on both beam and vault. She competed at both the Secret U.S. Classic (beam only) and at the Visa national championships in 2012.

Watson is a five-time qualifier to the J.O. national championships. She won bronze on vault and finished sixth on vault and in the all-around at the 2017 J.O. National Championships. She earned fourth in the all-around and third on both vault and bars at the Region 3 championships a few weeks earlier. She was the Texas state champion in both the all-around and on vault, picked up silver on bars, bronze on balance beam, and was fourth on floor exercise. Watson was the 2016 J.O. national champion on vault where she also finished seventh in the all-around and ninth on bars. She was the Region 3 vault champion in 2016 and the Texas state vault champion in 2015.

Glenn is a two-time J.O. nationals and J.O. NIT qualifier. She finished eighth on vault at J.O. nationals in 2017. Riddle finished ninth on beam and tied for 13th on floor at the 2017 Region 8 championships. She was the Alabama state champion on floor exercise in 2017, took silver on both balance beam and vault, bronze in the all-around, and finished fifth on bars. She won silver on beam and finished fifth on vault at the 2015 Alabama state championships.

Ashley Smith
Holly Springs, North CarolinaTrains at Sonshine

Smith is a seven-time qualifier to the J.O. national championships. She finished sixth and eighth on balance beam in 2017 and 2016 respectively. Her best result came in 2014 when she finished fifth in the all-around and was the J.O. national champion on uneven bars. She earned silver in the all-around and was the Region 8 champion on uneven bars in 2017, where she finished fifth on both balance beam and floor exercise and ninth on vault. She was the all-around champion at the North Carolina state championships several weeks earlier. At states, she took silver on both bars and floor, bronze on balance beam, and finished sixth on vault. Sylvia is a four-time Region 7 qualifier and a two-time J.O. national championship qualifier. Watson is a five-time qualifier to the J.O. national championships. She won bronze on vault and finished sixth on vault and in the all-around at the 2017 J.O. National Championships. She earned fourth in the all-around and third on both vault and bars at the Region 3 championships a few weeks earlier. She was the Texas state champion in both the all-around and on vault, picked up silver on bars, bronze on balance beam, and was fourth on floor exercise. Watson was the 2016 J.O. national champion on vault where she also finished seventh in the all-around and ninth on bars. She was the Region 3 vault champion in 2016 and the Texas state vault champion in 2015.
