The Road To NCAAs: Kennedy Baker Soars On Floor For Florida
Kennedy Baker knows what it's like to win a national championship. The junior was a member of the Gators' 2015 NCAA Championship-winning squad and Florida has a chance at grabbing its fourth title in five years on Saturday night.

Baker is capable of bringing in solid scores on bars and beam and a great score on both vault and floor. She had an uncharacteristic fall on her uneven bars dismount during the semifinals but posted scores of 9.850 or better on vault, beam and floor.

The junior was in and out of lineups this season after an ankle injury, but has not scored below a 9.900 on floor all season. She scored a perfect 10 on Jan. 27 against Auburn. She competed in all 13 meets this season on the uneven bars and scored at least a 9.850 on nine occasions this season.

Florida will face LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, UCLA and Utah in Saturday night's Super Six finals. Last year, the Gators finished fourth, though the top four teams were separated by just 0.325.

What is your favorite event to perform on and why?
My favorite event would probably be floor because I think that it's my best event. I just really like getting the crowd involved and showing off my dance and my big skills.

What is your favorite skill to perform on any event?
Probably still my double piked arabian on floor just because I haven't seen anyone else do it in college; feel like I'm the only one who does it. And it's kind of easy for me. It doesn't feel that hard. It's just something that's always been something I'm naturally good at.

What is the most challenging skill that you've learned and what made it challenging for you?
I would probably say that my most challenging skill to learn [was] probably a double on vault. It wasn't that it was hard to learn, it was my most inconsistent skill. One day they'd be on, one day they'd be off. It was a hit or miss thing.

What was the biggest thing you took away from regionals that you'll use heading into nationals?
I think that this team is really, really strong. I think this is one of the strongest teams that I've been on since I've been here. And going from regionals to nationals, just staying calm. We didn't have the best meet at regionals and we still got a 197.1 counting a fall, so I thought that was pretty impressive. I think that if we hit we're going to be really, really good and in a really good place at the NCAAs this year.

How do you bounce back from a fall, especially if there's one in front of you in the lineup?
I was a little bit nervous. Honestly, I acted like she didn't fall just so that I would remain normal. You just have to pick it back up. It kind of falls on the next person to get up and do what they know how to do and I think that's what this team did at regionals. There were two falls before me, [we] just had to start over in the lineup again and build up the energy again and carry that energy over instead of any negative energy that we had.

Is it more difficult to bounce back when it's the first couple of athletes on the first event of the competition?
I had to fight a little bit. Obviously regionals is not something that we ever take lightly. After we saw those two falls, we were like "oh no." We had to build it up a little bit. It showed how much fight we had in us to be able to come back from two falls to winning to make it to NCAAs. I think is one of the principles that this team is about and is what we stand for.

What's been the biggest challenge for you personally this season?
I would say the injuries. I think that my body's getting pretty old and I was walking and [rolled] my ankle. So just dealing with that stuff and making sure it's a good balance between when it's go-time and when I need to rest my body. I think that's something that we've really had to figure out this season.

Is there a little bit less pressure not going in as the defending national champions? What's the feeling this year?
I think we feel really, really good going into this year. I wouldn't say that it's less, I would say it's a different kind of pressure. Last year we were trying to get another title in a row and this year it's trying to get a title again. The only classes that know what it's like to win is our class and the senior class now. The freshman and sophomores don't know what it's like to win a national championship. I think that that might be a good thing just because they'll go above and beyond to win. They won't have to do the minimum, they'll try to do their best to get a national championship. So I think that's going to be the difference between this year and last year.

How would you describe yourself in three words?
Sarcastic, hard-working and a boss.

What are you most looking forward to at nationals?
There's a lot of things I'm looking forward to. I'm looking forward to just going out and competing with my team, being able to possibly get another national championship under our belt. And also, my best friend [Elizabeth Price] is in our group at nationals so I'm really excited about that. I'm more excited than I should be about that. I'm hyped.

Being such good friends with Elizabeth, what's it going to be like having her rotate with you?
She goes to Stanford but she's definitely on our team temporarily next week. I've already told my teammates they have to cheer extra loud for her because she is my best friend. I think it's really hard to not be with your team at nationals especially when you wanted your team to win and just you went. I think she's going to fit in very well and we're going to do a very good job of making her super comfortable when she travels with us.
