The Road To NCAAs: Alabama's Kiana Winston Aiming To 'Stay In The Moment'
Alabama had a tough outing on vault at regionals two weeks ago, but the Crimson Tide gymnasts are ready for the NCAA Championships this weekend. Kiana Winston has been a key for Alabama this season, especially on balance beam and floor exercise. The junior is currently ranked seventh on balance beam and is tied for fifth in the country on floor.

Winston has the huge tumbling skills on floor and a big double tuck dismount on beam. She also has gorgeous leaps on both events. She gets fantastic amplitude and shows great flexibility and extension, particularly on beam, where she has scored a 9.900 or better seven times this season, including a 9.975 on March 10.

She has competed in the all-around nine times this season and posted a season-best 39.700 on Feb. 3 against Florida. That performance included her first career perfect 10 on floor exercise.

Alabama faces off with three SEC rivals in Friday's second semifinal session in Florida, Georgia, and LSU as well as Big Ten foes Michigan and Nebraska.

FloGymnastics: What is your favorite event to perform on and why?
Kiana Winston: My favorite event to perform on is floor, because I like showing a little bit of my personality. I have two different sides of me--a sassy, kind of secret side on floor. I just like tumbling and performing.

What is your favorite skill to perform on any event?
My favorite skill to perform would probably be my Pak [salto] on bars, because I like the feeling of floating and not really knowing if I'm going to make it to the bar. But then I'm like 'Ah, yes. I made it.' It's weird, it's like 'oh I'm floating but oh wait, I have to catch the bar.'

What is the most challenging skill you've learned and what made it challenging for you?
The most challenging skill is probably my Ray on bars, because I didn't really know how to get over the bar so I figured I'd wait to get over the bar and turn it over. That's probably one of the most challenging ones.

What was the biggest thing you took away from regionals that you'll use heading into nationals?
The biggest thing I took away from regionals was that I wasn't completely free. So for nationals I'm going to be completely free and lay it all out on the floor knowing I can use the gifts that God's given me.

How does the adversity that your team faces during the regular season help prepare you for the postseason?
The adversity that this team has faced during the regular season has prepared us, because we've been in every situation that we possibly could to prepare. So for this last bit of the season, [we'll] just go out there, lay it all out on the floor, and trust that we can come back from anything and we can do anything.

How do you bounce back from a fall?
I personally just drop it, let it go because it's now in the past, and I can't linger on the past. I have to focus on what's to come and be present. So after a fall, I shake it off and get back up there and do everything for every turn.

You scored a 10.0 earlier in the season on floor. How special was that moment for you?
Getting the perfect 10 was just a highlight of this season. It's a glimpse of where this team has come and how much they believe in me. Just to be able to get that, it showed me that I was using my gifts that God's given me, and I have a lot to prove.

What has been the biggest challenge for you personally this season?
The biggest challenge has probably been listening to my body and knowing that it's more quality over quantity for me and making sure every turn counts rather than thinking I need to do something a million times. If I do it three times and it's perfect the first three times then I'm good to go.

How would you describe yourself in three words?
I would describe myself as thankful, having integrity, and dependable.

What are you most looking forward to about competing at nationals?
I'm most looking forward to competing one of the last times [this year] and just having fun and being in the moment.
