Meet Preview: Top Gymnasts To Watch At Iowa Big Five Meet

This weekend in the Big Ten will feature two key competitions leading up to the conference's championship meet.

Meet Preview: Top Gymnasts To Watch At Iowa Big Five Meet
This weekend in the Big Ten will feature two key competitions leading up to the conference's championship meet. A pair of Big Five meets hosted by Illinois and Iowa are set to determine the regular season champion along with the seeding for the Big Ten Championships. The top three teams from each Big Five meet will move on to the evening session at the conference championships next weekend.

The Big Five competition in Iowa City, Iowa, on Saturday includes Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, Penn State, and Rutgers. Michigan is currently tied with Iowa at the top of the Big Ten and will battle this weekend for the regular season title. The Hawkeyes will have the edge as they are on their home soil, but look for the Wolverines to continue their success from last season. 
 
Let's take a look at some of the top gymnasts to watch on each event:

Emma McLean (Michigan): Since debuting her Yurchenko 1 1/2 just a few weeks ago, McLean has been a standout, scoring a career-high 9.975. 
Olivia Karas (Michigan): Karas is a powerful vaulter who brings a 10.0 start value to Michigan's lineup and has a season high of 9.975. 
Brianna Tsang (Penn State): Tsang brings a strong Yurchenko 1 1/2 to the Nittany Lions' lineup with a season-high 9.875. 


Bars




Paige Zaziski (Michigan): Zaziski is atop the Big Ten on bars with a 9.975 season high. Zaziski is a huge boost and anchor to the Wolverines lineup with clean lines and big releases throughout. 
Sabrina Garcia (Penn State): Garcia is ranked second in the Big Ten on bars with a 9.95 season high. Garcia is a beautiful gymnast to watch on bars. Look for Garcia to notch a big score for the Nittany Lions. 
Angel Metcalf (Iowa): Metclaf is currently ranked fourth in the Big Ten on bars with a season high 9.925. Metcalf brings a strong and consistent bar routine to the lineup that will be one to watch.

Beam

Nicole Medvitz (Penn State):
 Medvitz is ranked second on beam in the Big Ten with a season average of 9.839. Medvitz is a very consistent gymnast for the Nittany Lions with her beautiful lines and flexibility. 
Talia Chiarelli (Michigan): Chiarelli is a strong and consistent gymnast to watch on beam for the Wolverines and finishes with a double tuck dismount.
Lauren Marinez (Michigan): With her stunning line and great difficulty, Marinez is a beautiful gymnast to see perform on beam.
 

Floor

Nicole Artz (Michigan): Artz scored her first perfect 10 on floor this season and brings high difficulty and performance value to her routine. Watch for Artz to anchor the floor lineup for the Wolverines with another high score. 
Bailey Abernathy (Minnesota): Abernathy is coming off a 9.95 last week and is looking for a big total to help the Gophers this weekend. Abernathy's routine is very clean and brings good difficulty.
Olivia Karas (Michigan): Along with Artz, Karas is also a gymnast to watch on floor for the Wolverines. Karas features a sky-high Arabian double front along with fun choreography. 


All-Around  


Nicole Artz (Michigan): Artz has always been a strong consistent performer for Michigan, and she is showing that again this season in her senior year. Artz has no weak events and will be vying for the all-around title. Artz's contribution to the Wolverines is key to their success this weekend. 
Mollie Drenth (Iowa): Drenth is currently ranked second in the all-around within the Big Ten. With a season high of 39.35, she will look to boost her team with a strong all-around performance.
Olivia Karas (Michigan): Karas is back in the all-around for the Wolverines after coming back from a wrist injury to start the season. Since joining the all-around, Karas has posted a season best of 39.60.
