Preview: NCAA Teams Compete at Chicago Style
The 2016 Chicago Style meet will take place this weekend, February 12-14, at the Navy Pier in Chicago, IL. Chicago Style is one of the top club meets in the country, and attracts top gyms across the nation each year. On top of that, there is an NCAA session which will feature Central Michigan, Temple, Alaska, and Northern Illinois.

FloGymnastics will be on site at Chicago Style and will be streaming the competition LIVE. We have taken a look at the NCAA teams competing and give the low down below on which gymnasts to watch for.

Central Michigan

Central Michigan is currently ranked #33 in the nation and competes in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The team has continued to improve their scores with each meet, and they logged their highest score last weekend in a meet against Eastern Michigan with a 195.4. Their best event at the moment is uneven bars, where they are ranked #19.

Central Michigan is led by their two all-around performers: freshman Kasey Janowicz and senior Taylor Bolender. Janowicz has made a stunning debut as a Chippewa. She has competed in the all-around in every meet this season and holds the season highs on both vault (9.875) and beam (9.9) for the team. Her all-around high so far this year is a 39.275, achieved last weekend. Bolender competed in the all-around for the first time in her career last weekend, achieving a 38.825. She is particularly strong on floor, where she holds a season and career high of 9.925.

Temple

Temple is currently ranked #64 in the country and competes in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). The Owls have been consistent competitors this year and achieved their season high of a 191.375 at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational in January. Like CMU, Temple’s best event this year is uneven bars, where they are ranked #58 nationally.

Junior Briana Odom and sophomore Sahara Gipson have been strong all-around competitors for Temple this year. Odom has been competing in the all-around since her freshman season, and she earned a career high of 38.875 at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational. In the same meet, she posted a career high on floor with a 9.8. Gipson, a transfer from Rutgers this year, is another strong competitor for the Owls. This is her first time competing in the all-around collegiately, and she has a high of a 38.325. One of her best events is vault, where she’s logged a 9.75 for the team this year. Senior Reagan Oliveri is also a leader for Temple. After coming back from an injury last year that sidelined her for the season, she is competing all-around again and achieved a high 38.350 last weekend. Oliveri had a slow start to the season, but wowed everyone last weekend when she posted a 9.85 on bars.

Alaska

Alaska is currently ranked #56 nationally and competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Seawolves have only had two competitions so far this year, against Bowling Green and BYU, but they posted above 191.000 at both meets.

Senior M’rcy Matsunami is undoubtedly the leader of this team. Last year, she delivered one of the best seasons in program history for Alaska, setting or tying 11 individual school records. She became the second gymnast in program history to break the 39.000 mark in the all-around. Her career highs are impressive on all four events: a 9.85 on vault, a 9.9 on bars, a 9.825 on beam and a 9.825 on floor. This season, she has already achieved her new career high on beam, and she has tied her career high on floor.

Matsunami is probably best known for her bar routine, where she performs a toe-on Counter Kim. She performed this skill last year at Regionals. Check out Matsunami's own video below of her performing this crazy skill at JO Nationals five years ago:

Northern Illinois

Northern Illinois is currently ranked #43 in the nation and competes in the MAC. The team achieved their season high score against Central Michigan earlier this year, posting a 194.675. Like their fellow competitors, their best event is uneven bars, where they are ranked #27.

The Huskies do not have a consistent all-around competitor, however they have stars on all four events. On vault, sophomore Andie Van Voorhis leads the team. Her career high on the event is a 9.875, and her season high this year is a 9.85. The team has several strong competitors on their best event - bars - and one of those competitors is junior Jamyra Carter, a bars specialist who has already tied her career high this year of a 9.875. She has not scored below a 9.825 in the last four competitions. Another strong bars specialist for the team is senior Lauren Africano. Africano has already scored a new career high this year with a 9.875 in last weekend’s meet against Kent State.

On beam, look out for junior Megan Greenfield. Greenfield also competes on vault and floor for the Huskies, but she’s been particularly consistent on beam this year, tying her career high of 9.825 in the first meet of the season. On floor, freshman Anna Martucci is securing her spot in the lineup with a strong performance so far this year. She has scored no lower than a 9.825 since her second meet, and she has a career high so far of a 9.85.

This will be an exciting quad match up between these teams, so be sure to tune in to the coverage here on FloGymnastics. The NCAA competition begins at 5:30pm CST on Friday, February 12th.
