Chris Brooks Leads Winter Cup Prelim 1
...

Chris Brooks
of Cypress Academy/Team Hilton HHonors leads all around competition after one of two preliminary sessions at the 2014 Winter Cup Challenge. Brooks totaled 85.80 in the all around highlighted by a 15.20 on high bar.

Watch Brooks on high bar:

2012 Olympic All Around bronze medalist Danell Leyva of Universal Gymnastics/Team Hilton HHonors sits in second place with room for improvement. Leyva has big room for improvement in the finals after counting falls on two of his strongest events, pommel horse and high bar.

Reigning Winter Cup Champion Jake Dalton will not attempt to defend his title this year. He's pacing himself for the season and recovering from surgery on his thumb after the World Championships. Dalton only competed still rings and hit his set for a 15.10, the second highest rings score of the meet thus far.

About Winter Cup and National Team Qualification
This event serves as Winter Nationals for the USA men. Performances at the 2014 Winter Cup Challenge will help determine the 15 men who will comprise the U.S. Men's Senior National Team through the 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships in Pittsburgh, Pa., Aug. 21-24. The six members of the 2013 World Championships squad, plus the two World alternates, retain their spots on the national team. The remaining seven spots will be determined based on the following criteria: the top two ranked all-around athletes who are not already on the senior national team; two based on the National Team Points System; two athletes selected by the Men's Program Committee; and one selected by the national team coordinator.

The Winter Cup competition schedule is: two preliminary sessions on Thursday (4 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. ET). The finals will begin at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday. Junior and senior gymnasts will be competing in the same field.

After Thursday's two preliminary sessions, the top 42 gymnasts, according to the Men's Program Committee's points ranking system, will advance to Saturday's finals competition, along with the top three gymnasts on each apparatus. The all-around and individual event champions will be determined via a combined two-day score.

Kimble Leads Winter Cup Finalists
...

USA Junior National Team member Marvin Kimble is out to prove he can compete with the Seniors and impressively leads the all around after preliminary competition at the 2014 Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas.

Kimble is an 18 year old high school senior and trains at Swiss Turners Gymnastics in Wisconsin. He totaled 86.20 in the all around highlighted by a 4th place finish parallel bars (14.850) with his signature double front half out dismount.

USA World and Olympic team member John Orozco of the USOTC and 19-year-old former Junior National Team member Sean Melton of Ohio State are just half a tenth behind, tied for second place (86.15). Melton was steady across six events. Orozco gave up big points after a very uncharacteristic performance on pommel horse resulting in a 12.70. However, he posted the highest score of the day on high bar with a 15.550.

Watch Orozco post the meet's top score on high bar:

Because they automatically retain their place on the National Team, the majority of the 2013 World team will not compete all around here. Orozco is the only World team member competing all six, using it as a tune up for the upcoming AT&T American Cup. Fellow American Cup competitor and World team member Sam Mikulak decided to skip the event all together.

2014 Winter Cup
Chris Brooks won the all-around title at the 2014 Winter Cup, a placement meet for the U.S. National Team. His victory maintained his spot on the National Team.

In his first all around competition in over a year, former U.S. World team member and 2012 Olympic Alternate Chris Brooks won the all around title at the 2014 Winter Cup Challenge. Scores were combined for two days of competition in Las Vegas.

With his victory, Brooks maintained his place on the USA Senior National team. Brooks nailed his parallel bars routine for a 15.550 to solidify his victory over 19-year-old Donnel Whittenburg of the USOTC who finished second.

Ohio State freshman and former U.S. Junior National team member Sean Melton finished 3rd all around.

Olympians John Orozco and Danell Leyva finished a disappointing 6th place and 9th place respectively. Orozco, however, dominated the competition on high bar and won the event title.

Current NCAA athletes claimed apparatus titles on four events. Oklahoma junior Alec Robin tied with Stanford alum Eddie Penev for the floor title, Penn State junior Craig Hernandez won pommel horse, Illinois freshman Chandler Eggleston and Penev tied for vault, and Stanford freshman Akash Modi won parallel bars with his incredible full twisting double back dismount. To no surprise, reigning World still rings bronze medalist Brandon Wynn of the USOTC won the rings title.

The Winter Cup serves as the annual USA Gymnastics men's winter Nationals and determines placement on the USA Senior National Team. All members and alternates to the 2013 USA World team automatically retianed their places on the National Team. Following the conclusion of the competition, Brooks, Whittenburg, Melton and Joshua Dixon of Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Olympic Training Center, were added to the U.S. Men's Senior National Team. Three additional athletes will be named later, according to USA Gymnastics
