Disastrous Start Doomed No. 5 Utah

A disastrous start doomed the No. 5 Ute gymnasts at No. 2 UCLA in Pauley Pavilion, where Utah opened its season with a 197.425-195.300 loss. The Utes dug themselves an insurmountable hole by falling three times on their first event, the uneven bars. Though they bounced back with a good vault set, and wouldn't count a fall the rest of the way, the damage was done.

"People did things I've never seen before," said Marsden of the fall-filled bar start. "The only explanation I can give is we let the nerves to get us and then let it snowball. We had a lot of people (working events) they've never done before, but I was proud that after our meltdown on bars, they came back and did a reasonably good job."

Mary Beth Lofgren, who was scheduled to be the alternate on bars before all-arounder Kassandra Lopez injured her calf in the final practice before the team left for L.A., fell as Utah's first competitor of the night. Freshman Breanna Hughes, performing her first college routine, seemed unfazed by the veteran's struggles, scoring a 9.85. But juniors Nansy Damianova and Hailee Hansen followed Hughes' routine with back-to-back falls. Even with a 9.85 from Corrie Lothrop and a 9.875 from Georgia Dabritz, Utah trailed by a bunch, 49.300-48.075, after one rotation.

The Utes rebounded with their best event of the night by scoring a 49.250 on vault and sophomore Tory Wilson earned the first win of her young career, scoring a 9.90 to tie for first. Dabritz (9.875) and Lia Del Priore (9.85) also put up big scores for the Utes, who trailed 98.575-97.325 after two rotations.

Though the Utes wouldn't match their vault set, they did turn in a decent 49.100 on the floor, highlighted by Damianova and Becky Tutka's 9.85 scores. It wasn't nearly enough to make up ground and Utah trailed 147.875-146.425 heading into the last rotation of the night.

"We had a lot of difficulty in our floor exercise routines and didn't water down at all," said Marsden. We just have to grow into our routines a little bit."

Beam got off to a shaky start when Wilson took a fall in the first beam routine of her career. Her score would get tossed after Utah's final five competitors stayed on the apparatus. Again, the freshman Hughes proved steady, scoring a 9.825. Dabritz, who fell off the beam a year ago in her only performance on that event her freshman year, turned in a marvelous 9.875 routine to secure a career-high all-around score.

Dabritz' 39.400 led Utah's all-arounders and earned her second place behind UCLA's Vanessa Zamarripa (39.675). Lothrop finished third in the all-around with a 39.300.

Georgia Upsets Alabama, 197.500-196.950!

Shocker in Athens! The Georgia Gym Dogs have just upset the back to back national champions of Alabama.

The No. 8 Georgia Gym Dogs used a season high score to hand No. 5 Alabama its first loss of the season, 197.500-196.950, on Saturday at Stegeman Coliseum in front of a sold-out crowd of 9,924.

Both teams tallied season-high scores. This marks the second time Georgia has broken 197 this season. Both scores came at home.

The Gym Dogs were boosted with the return of senior All American Noel Couch who posted 9.875's on both beam and floor.

Georgia surged to an early lead, scoring a season-high 49.475 on vault compared to Alabama's shaky start on bars with just a 48.950. Georgia was led by freshman and former elite Brandie Jay, who tallied a career-high 9.95. Lindsey Cheek, 9.925, and Canadian Olympian Brittany Rogers, 9.9, tied their season high scores.

Former national team member Chelsea Davis won her sixth bars title this season with a 9.925 and Rogers notched another season-high tying 9.9 to lead Georgia to a 49.275.

The Tide scored a 49.375 on the vault behind 9.9's from sophomore Kaitlyn Clark, senior Marissa Gutierrez and junior Diandra Milliner. It was the Tide’s second highest vault total of the season but heading into rotation three the Gym Dogs has increased their advantage, 98.750-98.325.

Kaylan Earls recorded a career-high 9.95 on beam with a big double tuck dismount to lead the Gym Dogs to a season-high 49.425 on the event. Meanwhile, Alabama delivered a season-best 49.475 floor performance behind career-high 9.95's from Milliner and Kim Jacob and a 9.9 from Gutierrez.

Georgia maintained the lead following the third rotation, 148.175-147.800.

Jay notched another career high on floor with a 9.9, and Couch, Earls and Christa Tanella all scored 9.875's as Georgia recorded a 49.325. Alabama put up a 49.150 on beam led by a 9.875 for senior Ashley Priess as the Gym Dogs sealed their win over the Tide.

Alabama head coach Sarah Patterson said, “I didn’t see all of Georgia’s routines, but what I did see told me that they were on fire tonight,” Patterson said. “I’ve said this before, from the time that coaching staff was hired, they had this meet circled in red on their calendar. We came in with a target on our backs.”

This is a huge victory for new head coach Danna Durante who is hungry for her first national title.

Alabama will travel to another hostile environment next weekend as they head to Gainesville, Fla., to take on No. 1 ranked Florida on Friday, February 8th while Georgia will compete on the road at Kentucky.

Washington Shows Up! Tops Arizona 196.025-195.200

After a disappointing start to the season, the unranked Washington Huskies finally put it all together today in Seattle, sweeping the meet over Arizona. Washington smashed their previous season high of 194.875 set last weekend at the Metroplex Challenge with a solid 196.025 today.

SEATTLE - The team title. The all-around. The vault, bars, beam and floor. The GymDawgs won everything Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena with a huge score and upset over No. 12 Arizona, 196.025-195.200.

Washington posted team season-highs on three of the four events and outscored Arizona on all four events to take the dual meet victory. It was the best team score for the Huskies in 2013 by over a point.

Despite tough scoring on vault which led to a 48.650, the Huskies were pleased with their routines and took that positive thinking to the next three events, scoring a 49.175 on bars, a 49.125 on beam and 49.075 on floor.

"We've been waiting to put four good events together," said head coach Joanne Bowers. "It was nice to be able to do it tonight. Everybody contributed. Our goal was to improve a little bit each week and put it together and we did that tonight."

Individually, nearly every Husky that competed scored at least a season-high if not a career-high on at least one event. For the first time in 2013, the Huskies swept all four individual titles and the all-around.

Senior Lauren Rogers (Plains, Pa.) won her second all-around title of the year posting a new career-best of 39.175. She also took the individual title on vault scoring a 9.850.

"I think we are all really proud of ourselves," said co-captain Rogers. "We have been building up to this every single meet and we are proud we really did it and proved to everyone what we could do."

Two freshmen won their first collegiate titles on the night with career-bests as Sheridan Metcalf (Mesa, Ariz.) won bars with a 9.875 and Allison Northey (Sammamish, Wash.) won the beam with a 9.850. Sophomore Jackie McCartin (West Covina, Calif.) tied for first on beam with Northey.

"Getting a 196 is something we knew we could get but we hadn't been able to execute in a meet and I know we can get higher so I'm excited to see what's next," said Northey.

Junior Aliza Vaccher (Eugene, Ore.) won her second-straight floor title with a 9.900. Vaccher was second on vault with a 9.775.

The Huskies took the top four sports on bars as McCartin, Northey and McKenzie Fechter (Mequon, Wis.) tied for second behind Metcalf with a 9.850.

Fechter and senior Paige Bixler (Rowlett, Texas) posted a 9.825 each to tie for third on beam. Bixler also posted a 9.825 on floor to tie for third on that event as well.

Next up for the UW is a Quad Meet at UCLA on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. featuring UC Davis and Sacramento State.

#3 Michigan Wins UCLA Quad Meet

Competing in the site of the 2013 NCAA Championships, UCLA's Pauley Pavillion, the #3 ranked Michigan Wolverines rallied after a slow start on beam (48.925) to win today's quad meet at UCLA with their highest team score of the season, 197.550.

UCLA finished in second with a respectable 197.075. California scored a 194.925 to edge out Iowa State's 194.650.

Michigan used stuck landings on every event to earn incredible team totals of 49.50 or higher on every event but beam. Their vault total of 49.550 was their highest team vault score since 2008.

The Wolverines led UCLA by just two tenths heading into the final rotation. Michigan was on uneven bars while the Bruins competed floor. Anette Miele led off the Michigan bar squad with a fall on her tkatchev, but her team stepped up to score a massive 49.575 thanks to a 9.95 by Sachi Sugiyma. Joanna Sampson anchored the event with a 9.925 to match the incredible scores posted by teammates Brittnee Martinez and Katie Zurales.

This meet also featured a matchup of the nation's top all arounders. UCLA senior Vanessa Zamarripa is currently ranked first nationally with an RQS of 39.590 while Sampson of Michigan is second with an RQS of 39.50. Zamarripa had a few small wobbles today, giving Sampson the all around edge with an huge 39.575. Zamarripa finished with a 39.40 to tie for second with teammate Olivia Courtney.

Zamarripa and Courntey also tied for today's vault title with 9.950's. Sugiyama won the bar title outright with her 9.950. Iowa State's Michelle Shealy won beam with a 9.875. Sampson shared the floor title with UCLA scored Alyssa Pritchett who scored a career high 9.950.

UCLA sophomore Mattie Larson unfortunately suffered a knee injury during warmups and could not compete.

No. 7 Utah Upsets No. 2 Florida 198.125-197.875

A pre-meet light show wasn't the only thing that lit up the Huntsman Center in Utah's final home gymnastics meet of the season. The No. 7-ranked Utes electrified a crowd of 14,930 with the third-highest score in school history and upset No. 2 Florida 198.125-197.875.

The Utes scored season highs on three of four events, making their move on the favored Gators in the second rotation on the uneven bars, where Georgia Dabritz brought down the house with a perfect 10.0.

"It felt great," said Dabritz, the defending Pac-12 uneven bar champion who entered the meet ranked eighth in the nation on the bars. "I hit the ground and thought, `that was probably my best one yet.'"

Dabritz repeatedly credited the fans for Utah's breakout performance and its best score ever against a team other than instate rival BYU. "Our main goal tonight was to put on a show for our amazing crowd in our last home meet. Oh my gosh, having all these people come here for us. It's impossible to describe what it's like."

The fans started warming up on the first event when Tory Wilson, the nation's top-ranked vaulter, extended her win streak to 10 by scoring a 9.975 to tie for first with Florida's Kytra Hunter. Hunter is the defending NCAA vault and all-around champion.

By the time Dabritz finished the best meet of her career--she tied for first place in the all-around with a career-high 39.700, won the bars with a 10.0 and tied for first on floor (with teammate Becky Tutka) with a 9.975--the Huntsman Center crowd was in a constant roar. The fans even got a chance to cheer for themselves after learning their beloved Utah gymnastics team had won its third NCAA all-sports season attendance title for women, averaging 14,349 fans to its meets this year to beat out Tennessee women's basketball and Alabama gymnastics.

Utah trailed in the meet just once, scoring a 49.450 on vault behind Florida's 49.550 on the bars in the first rotation. But finishers Dabritz (9.925) and Wilson (9.975) set the tone for what was to come.

Leading up to Dabritz's 10.0 on the bars were career-high 9.90 scores from Wilson, Breanna Hughes, Hailee Hansen and Kassandra Lopez. Utah's 49.600--easily its best this season--missed the school record by a single tenth; a record set 20 years and two conferences ago at the 1993 Western Athletic Conference Championship. Most importantly, it moved Utah ahead of the Gators, who scored a 49.450 on vault, 99.050-99.000.

Asked if the big bar score surprised him since bars has been an inconsistent event for the Utes this season, coach Greg Marsden responded, "That's the bar team I see in the gym all the time. I feel like this is the first time this year they really relaxed and performed how they do in practice."

It was a confident Utah team that went to the balance beam, where the Utes scored a season-best 49.425. Kassandra Lopez scored a career-best 9.925 to tie for second place and Wilson also set a career mark with a 9.90. Florida's 49.375 on floor gave Utah a slim tenth of a point lead entering the final rotation, 148.475-148.375.

It was a fight to the finish with the Gators showing no signs of pressure and scoring a 49.500 on the beam. But Utah did even better on the floor, scoring a season-best 49.650, led by 9.975 scores by Tutka and Dabritz.

Georgia Scores Season-High 197.80 to Win At NC State

The sixth-ranked Georgia gymnastics team used a season-high score and the second-highest road mark of any team this year to defeat NC State in the regular season finale, 197.800-196.000 Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum.

The Gym Dogs turned in their highest regular season road score since a 197.825 at Alabama in 2004 and a 49.625 on the balance beam, which ties the second-highest mark in program history.

"This was huge for our confidence," said UGA coach Danna Durante. "We surpassed our goal today, and I'm really proud of them. It was an incredible team effort.

"I've been saying that beam could be our strongest event, and we saw today what they do in practice every day. It's just how they train. Sarah Persinger found her rhythm to start us off, and I'm super proud of all of them. I can't say enough about them; they did an amazing job."

The Gym Dogs opened the meet with a 49.35 on bars, which is just .075 shy of the season-high on the road. Chelsea Davis led the team again with a 9.925, her 10th straight score of 9.9 or higher on bars. Shayla Worley and Brittany Rogers added a pair of 9.875s, while NC State turned in a 49.0 on vault in the first rotation.

Georgia then went to vault and scored its season-high on the road with a 49.4. Cat Hires tied her career-high with a 9.925, and Lindsey Cheek and Brandie Jay closed the rotation by scoring a pair of 9.9s. With the Wolfpack's 49.1 on bars, UGA led at the halfway point, 98.750-98.100.

In the third rotation, Georgia posted its second-highest mark on floor this season with a 49.425. Jay scored a career-high 9.975 in the anchor, and Mary Beth Box turned in a 9.9 in the first floor routine of her career. After three rotations, Georgia led 148.175-146.875, which equaled its highest score through three rotations this year.

The Gym Dogs closed the meet with the highest road beam score in school history - a 49.625 - helped by five career-highs. Persinger and Noel Couch started the rotation with two 9.9s, then Cheek went 9.925 before Worley and Kaylan Earls closed the meet with 9.95s.

"It was a great meet today," Worley said. "If you look at the last two meets we keep improving, and it shows that we are peaking at the right time. This builds our confidence going to SECs."

Rogers won the all-around for the third time in four meets with a 39.40. A Georgia gymnast owned or shared first on all four events: Hires on vault, Davis on bars, Worley and Earls on beam, and Jay on floor.

Georgia will begin postseason competition at the SEC Championship Saturday, March 23 at 7 p.m. ET. The first session will begin at 3 p.m., and will include Auburn, Kentucky, Arkansas and Missouri. The Gym Dogs will begin the second session on beam and will compete against Florida, Alabama and LSU.

UCLA ties season high score to Defeat Arkansas on Senior Night

The eighth-ranked UCLA Bruins tied their season high team score to defeat number 15 Arkansas in their final regular season home meet in Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins pulled away in the final rotation thanks to a 49.550 on floor to match the 197.425 they scored January 12th while hosting Utah. The Razorbacks finished with a 196.600, the team’s best road score of the season.

Competing in her final regular season meet, 5th year senior Vanessa Zamarripa stole the show with a nearly flawless all around performance, winning the meet with a 39.675. Zamarripa scored her 8th career perfect 10.0 on vault with a gorgeous yurchenko full. She followed that up with a 9.95 to anchor the team on uneven bars, winning titles on both events.

Freshman and former British national team member Danusia Francis hit her best beam routine of the year, winning the event title with a 9.95. Senior Alyssa Pritchett scored a 9.95 on floor for the second straight weekend to tie for the event title with teammate Olivia Courtney.

UCLA honored its five seniors - Kaelie Baer, Monique De La Torre, Lichelle Wong, Pritchett, and Zamarripa - after Sunday's meet. This group of seniors has won one NCAA Championship (2010), three NCAA Regional championships and two Pac-12 championships (fifth-year seniors Baer, Pritchett and Zamarripa have won three) and has placed in the Top 3 at the last three NCAA Championships. All five have been instrumental figures in the Bruins' success this season.

UCLA will host the 2013 NCAA Championships in Pauley Pavilion on Apr. 19-21. This will be UCLA's fourth time hosting the NCAAs. The Bruins won the national title the last time they hosted in 2004, scoring an NCAA record 198.125.

#7 Utes Hold Off #10 Stanford 197.300-197.075

No. 7 Utah and No. 10 Stanford went down to the wire before the Utes escaped with a 197.300-197.075 victory. Yet live TV and another major snowstorm didn't deter 13,357 fans from showing up in the Huntsman Center and assisting in the victory.

"We really do have the best fans in the nation to come out in this weather," marveled Utah coach Greg Marsden after Utah set a season high score.

By the buzz in the stands before Tory Wilson's vault, most in the crowd hoped to witness another 10.0 from the nation's leading vaulter. While Wilson scored "only" a 9.95 to tie for first place with Stanford's Nicole Dayton, the fans did get their 10.0 in the end.

Junior Lia Del Priore, who came off the exhibition list just four meets ago after the season-ending injury to 2012 Pac-12 all-around champion Corrie Lothrop, scored a 10.0 from the No. 2 position on the floor exercise. It was Utah's first 10.0 on floor since Annabeth Eberle's perfect score seven years ago.

"The leg events are not an issue for us," said Marsden. "I think we can hang with anyone on those two events (vault and floor). To prove his point, the Utes scored a season-high 49.500 on vault and a 49.525 on the floor. In contrast, Utah again struggled on beam, scoring a 49.025, although it did improve on bars from a week ago with a 49.250.

If the back and forth in the scoring column didn't make it hard enough to differentiate between the two gymnastics titans, the identical leotards they wore for Utah's first-ever "blackout" meet didn't help.

The Utah leotards took a .375 lead at the midway point, but balance beam tipped the meet in the Cardinal's favor. While Utah struggled on two of its six routines, the Cardinal rarely wavered from start to finish.

"We're trying too hard on beam and we're not confident," said Marsden. "You have to feel like you can go to that event and win the meet. We had two spectacular training days on beam and then had balance checks and weren't aggressive or confident (in the meet)."

The Utes were plenty confident on vault with Wilson remaining undefeated while picking up her seventh victory. Utah last had a gymnast win seven-straight vault titles in 2010 (Kyndal Robarts). Wilson got plenty of help from her supporting cast on the vault. Del Priore, Georgia Dabritz and Nansy Damianova all scored 9.90s, with career highs coming from Del Priore and Damianova. After the first rotation, Utah held what would prove its biggest lead of the night, 49.500-49.050.

On bars, freshman Breanna Hughes, who has been one of Utah's steadiest performers all season, stumbled badly on her dismount, although she didn't touch the mat. Her 9.525 score didn't count toward the team total, however when the Utes came back with three 9.850s and Dabritz's victorious 9.925 routine. After two events, Utah led the Cardinal 98.750-98.375.

Most of that lead disappeared in round three, although Mary Beth Lofgren's 9.90 at the end of the beam lineup bailed the Utes out of a potentially disastrous set. Becky Tutka (9.775), Hughes (9.825) and Wilson (9.85) got the Utes off to a good start before trouble struck. Kassandra Lopez (9.35) and Dabritz (9.675) struggled mightily to stay on the beam--Lopez touched her hand on the beam and ran out of her dismount for a 9.350-- and Dabritz needed a big balance check to stay on board for a 9.675. After three rotations, Utah led by just .175 (147.775-147.600).

Lucky for Utah, while Stanford was tearing up the beam with a 49.475, Del Priore kept Utah in front with her 10.0 on floor.

The Utes improve to 7-1-1 and 4-1-1 in the Pac-12. Stanford drops to 8-3 and 3-2 in the Pac-12.
