Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas is an elite and Olympic gymnast from Virginia Beach, Virginia, who currently trains at Buckeye Gymnastics in Ohio. Gabby is the 2012 Olympic all-around champion as well as a two-time world champion.
Douglas burst onto the elite gymnastics scene after unofficially winning the 2012 American Cup where she competed exhibition routines, which is why her scores didn’t actually give her the crown. She continued to excel in 2012 at the Visa Championships, where she placed second in the all-around, and finally won her first elite all-around crown at the 2012 Olympic Trials.
At the 2012 London Olympics, Douglas became the third consecutive and fourth overall American female gymnast to win the Olympic all-around title. She is the first African-American to win the coveted crown.
Douglas’ high-flying releases on uneven bars make her gymnastics stand out and have given her the nickname “Flying Squirrel.”
