Dave Brubaker, Gymnastics Canada's women's national team director, was charged Friday with 10 sex crimes, as reported by the Sarnia Observer. The charges include one count of invitation to sexual touching, and three counts each of sexual assault, sexual exploitation, and sexual interference.

Along with his role with Canada's national team as the head coach at Olympic Games and World Championships, Brubaker also led the Bluewater Gymnastics Club in Sarnia for more than 30 years and was inducted into the Sarnia-Lambton Sports Hall of Fame in 2016,

He has been placed on indefinite unpaid leave at Bluewater Gymnastics Club and with Gymnastics Canada, which issued a statement saying it is “shocked and deeply troubled” by the news of Brubaker’s charges.

Richard Crepin, Gymnastics Canada board chair, said:

"Sport should be a safe place for everyone, and we’re working hard to ensure that we have the policies and procedures, as well as the education and resources in place, to ensure the safety of all of our participants."

Gretchen Kerr, a physical education professor at the University of Toronto who studies abuse and harassment in sport, provided insight into another appalling case of high-powered figured abusing their power in the most devastating way.

“Many athletes and their parents — which is an interesting piece of it — are actually groomed in such a way to accept, in a very unquestioned way, the authority of the coach,” she said.

“To be an Olympian, you’re already one of the very, very few. If you raise concerns, of course, both athletes and parents, you pretty well can kiss your career goodbye.”

Within the last year, the tables have turned, and a reckoning has begun. As McKayla Maroney said in response to the abuse she faced in the hands of Larry Nassar,

Our silence has given the wrong people power for too long, and it's time to take our power back.

Following Brubaker's arrest, he was released on bail and will return to court February 6.
