Maggie Nichols suffered a knee injury while practicing an Amanar before the Pacific Rim Championships, confirmed to be a meniscus tear. She was replaced by Ragan Smith just a few days before the competition.
Nichols underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and will be out four to six weeks, Martha Karolyi said Sunday, according to NBC Sports. Martha is confident this will not take Nichols off the list of top Rio contenders.
Nichols started out the 2016 season at the American Cup where she took second all-around behind Gabby Douglas. She is known for her outstanding work ethic and consistency, and if anyone will be able to come back strong from an injury like this, it is Nichols.
She hopes to be ready for the Secret U.S. Classic (June 3-5) before P&G Championships (June 23-26) and the Olympic Trials (July 8-10).
