Gymnast of the Week

In honor of this past weekend NCAA showcase of spectacular gymnastics and The University of Alabama’s win in the SEC, this week’s gymnast of the week is awarded to Terin Humphrey, who was a member of ‘Bama gymnastics from 2005-2008.

Humphrey began her gymnastics career at a young age in her home state of Missouri where she trained with Dragon Gymnastics at Great American Gymnastics Express under Al Fong and Armine Barutyan. Humphrey was not the only gymnastics great that Fong and Barutyan produced; Humphrey was teammates with Courtney McCool and Fong coached Ivana Hong through 2008.

Humphrey competed on the 2004 Olympic team that competed in Athens, Greece, where the team took home the silver medal in the team competition; which was at the time the best showing of a women’s team at a meet away from home. During the team competition, Humphrey competed on bars and balance beam where she performed her signature skill, the Humphrey; a 2 ½ turn in a tuck position, standing on one leg with the free leg at horizontal. Terin also competed in the uneven bars event finals, where she captured the silver medal, making her the first woman to win a medal on the event since Amy Chow in 1996.

Prior to the 2004 Olympic Games, Terin competed on the 2003 World’s team and helped the team win the first ever gold medal in the team competition in American history.

After the Olympics games, Humphrey committed to the University of Alabama on a full-ride gymnastics scholarship, becoming the first Olympian to compete for Alabama. During her college career she helped Alabama win second place at NCAA Championships and stole the NCAA Uneven Bar Individual National Champion, all in her freshman season. In 2006, Humphrey had surgery on both elbows, but bounced back from the surgery and was still able to capture the uneven bar title in the 2007 season. In 2008, due to back injuries Humphrey was forced to retire from the sport.

Post elite and college career, Terin returned to Missouri and became a police officer, a dream she had since childhood when watching NYPD Blue. Terin is also still involved in gymnastics and is serving as an athlete representative for the 2012 Olympics in London.

Here is Terin's beam routine from the 2004 Olympics. The Humphrey is part of her mount!
